Derrick Rose Contest Winner Announced; Massive Collector Gallery Included

May 9, 2011

Another contest, another astonishing show of collecting passion from readers of The Knight’s Lance.

Last week, in honor of Derrick Rose winning 2010-11 NBA MVP honors, we asked collectors to show their own MVP (Most Valuable Panini) card for a chance to win a stunning Rose 1/1 memorabilia gem from Panini America’s fabled 2011 Industry Summit Black Boxes.

The outpouring of quality entries from quality collectors was stunning, leaving us feeling both humbled . . . and upset that we didn’t have more Rose 1/1s to award. Alas, there could be only one winner. But we’ve scoured our resources and have decided that such a strong showing deserves more prizes. So in addition to the grand-prize recipient, five additional runners-up will each receive a box of 2010-11 Absolute Memorabilia Basketball.

Now, onto awarding the Rose 1/1.

So here’s the deal, with so many compelling entries, we did the only fair thing and placed all eligible responses into an online randomizer and let the computer do the hard work for us. The first name it kicked out (and your grand-prize winner): Early responder James Huesing, who penned the following entry:

“I absolutely love this John Wall Gold Team Logo Patch Auto. It’s from 2010-11 Rookies & Stars and there is actually quite a story behind it. So a lot of the time on your Facebook and Twitter pages, people complain about this and that, especially redemptions. I recently pulled two redemption cards and grew a little frustrated. I almost quit on Panini there and then, but I decided to try one last time. I bought a box of 2010-11 Rookies & Stars at my local card store. I literally opened 21 of the 24 packs in the box and I had only one hit (Caron Butler jersey card). I was about to go on Panini’s website to file a complaint about quality assurance, because I was sure there was no way that those last three packs all had hits in them. They did. And guess what? One of them was a case hit too! John Wall auto #’d to 25! (And no, it was not a redemption.)”

Thanks, James. It’s good to see this Rose is going to a good home. We can assure you, not every Rose has a thorn. This one is impeccable.

As for our five Absolute box winners, once again we relied upon our trusty online randomizer, which selected entrants Nicole, Joe Marfil, Mike Lourenco, Graeme Lock and Sierra Thompson. (We’ll be in touch to obtain all your mailing addresses.)

Thanks so much, again, to all of you who participated. Your interaction makes all the difference in the world to Panini America and we look forward to more great contests that put cool stuff into your hands. It’s the least we can for all the support you give us.

Now, for the part I like the most: Profiling all you great collectors in a massive gallery:
