Panini Peek: 2011 Gridiron Gear Football

August 19, 2011

When Panini America NFL Product Development team members set out to construct and improve Gridiron Gear Football for a new season, they considered a host of possibilities. Foremost among them, however, was making the still-revolutionary-after-all-these-years Rookie Gridiron Gems — arguably collecting’s most unique Rookie Cards — more attainable than ever.

As a result, the popular RCs, numbered this season to 349 or less, will fall eight per case when 2011 Gridiron Gear Football releases November 16.

“It’s been more than 10 years since we first introduced the pioneering Rookie Gridiron Gems pull-out rookie autograph cards, one of the most innovative combinations of autographs and memorabilia the hobby has ever seen,” said Ben Ecklar, Panini America’s Director of Product Development. “All these years later, they remain unparalleled. And in an industry that sees more than its fair share of copycat concepts, that’s saying quite a lot.”

Each 18-pack box of 2011 Gridiron Gear will deliver two autographs numbered to 349 or less, two memorabilia cards numbered to 299 or less, 18 Rookie Cards and nine additional inserts or parallels.

Other product highlights include:

  • NFL Gridiron Signatures, featuring superstar autographs on unique NFL field plates, will include first-time Field Plate signers such as 2010 Comeback Player of the Year Michael Vick and Pro Bowl QBs Philip Rivers and Drew Brees.
  • NFL Pro Gridiron Signatures, autograph cards that include unique rubber team helmets embedded into the card, will feature only the greatest legends in NFL history.
  • Each card in the Plates & Patches Signatures insert will include two prime pieces of memorabilia an autograph and sequential numbering to 10 or less.

“Unique collectible enhancements such as the pull-out memorabilia autographs, embedded rubber helmets and NFL field plates really make Gridiron Gear stand out from the crowd and give the product a distinct and instantly recognizable identity among collectors,” Ecklar said.

The signature card with the football ground as the backing is awesome. Something like that in an NBA release with the signatures on players home courts would be awesome!! The mini helmet on the Pro sigs is pretty cool as well!

Rodgers isn’t a first-time Field Plate signer – he had one last year:

I looked over all the cards in this set and I love every aspect of it. The overall design is appealing, not a lot of noise on the base cards and the Rookie Gems Autographs are great. The on card football field autographs look great too! I;ll have to try and sell some stuff to get me a couple of boxes. Nice Job Panini! Hi Tracy!

Rookie Gridiron Gems look awesome!! I love that you brought back the Gridiron sigs using the same technology you did in one of my favorite brands last year Epix. Looks like a tremendous product! Do you have an extra Eli Manning card like that lying around!! Holy Cow!! That Card is beautiful!!!! I would do anything to own that lol 🙂

I love the NFL Draft Hats signed that were distributed at the National. I was wondering how many hats are there and is there a listing of who signed a draft. Is it only football and are they all 1/1’s that were actually worn at the draft?

The hats were worn during the NFL PLAYERS Rookie Debut, an event held in conjunction with the NFL Draft. We also gave away hats that were worn during the NFL PLAYERS Rookie Premiere.

Always like the pull outs and the helmets ……..plates and patches are a nice add as well!

Does the Plates & Patches inclusion as an insert in this product mean that it will not be a standalone product again this year?

It’s okay with the mistakes/confusion Tracy. You’re probably still giddy over watching Tebow play well this preseason.

This is always one of my favorite products because it has an imaginative, inventive and experimental vibe to it.
