The Panini America QC Gallery: 2011 Playoff Contenders Baseball (40 Must-See Images)

February 21, 2012

Most passionate baseball fans would have a difficult time determining exactly which of the following developments is more exciting: Pitchers and catchers from around the majors reporting to spring training or the release of 2011 Playoff Contenders Baseball.

The former happened over the weekend. The latter arrives later this week. Both, however, are sure to be met with open arms by baseball fans and collectors across the country. We got our first intimate look at 2011 Playoff Contenders Baseball this morning — and we liked what we saw.

We could attempt to wax poetic about the myriad niceties of the product that follows closely on the heels of the popular 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition release, but we figured we’d let the following 40 images do our talking for us.

Enjoy this extended look at the product and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional information.

    1. Excellent looking set overall, especially that Kolton Wong parallel.

    2. Nice to see at legendary auto in the gallery, any more details available on who signed for the set? Any season ticket (current players) autographs in the set?

    3. Would you be open to posting the sell sheets that shops and distributors receive so collectors can get a closer look at upcoming products sooner? I used to work at a store and I enjoyed reading the literature sent prior to release to get a thorough understanding of future releases.

    4. Prince Fielder is listed as a Milwaukee player on his season ticket card in the gallery, will that be updated to Detroit prior to release to reflect his move or is it too late in the process?

Thanks as always for the work you do Tracy!

Thanks for the great feedback as usual, Tom. I’ll check with the baseball team on what other legends and current players are included on the checklist.

We typically post all of the sell-sheet information as soon as we get it via our Panini Peek posts. As for the Prince Fielder card in question, the cards were already printed at the time he signed with Detroit, but that designation will most certainly be changed going forward.

I am usually Mr. Positive on here but this product doesnt seem to capture the “majesty” of baseball. These Draft Tickets look lifeless and are not exciting pulls I would think. This set needs to offer much more HOF, stars, MLB players of NOW, and a tad less of tomorrow’s hopes. Give us the REAL CONTENDERS. Just my opinion that might help with future baseball products.

Love the design of the Draft Tickets. ARe those numbered? Love the rainbow effect!also, Is Griffey in this set…or just in the Limited Cuts?
If baseball Contenders is anything like the football counterpart…should be awesome!

To be honest, I have yet to try any of Panini’s baseball products (also been awhile since I have tried Panini NBA as well for the same reason other than a few Prestige packs here and there for the new rookies) yet due to lack of funds and my focus on football when I do have funds. I was a huge fan of Donruss and you guys def carried on greatness and added to it! .

    But these look great! Lintastic!

    Hey Tracy,

Nice looking cards, those Draft Ticket Autos are going to be awesome to collect – can’t wait to buy a few boxes….on a side question related to Contenders, but of the football variety…I am trying to locate the print runs for the rookie tickets and rookie ink autographs. Do you know where I can find this information??

We haven’t released that information just yet. As soon as we do, it will be right here first.

I am looking at the pictures and am confused why MLB uniforms are not pictured….doesn’t Panini have a contract with MLB??

    • February 21, 2012 5:02 pm

We have a license with the Major League Baseball Players Association.

ahhh, I see, that means you have the rights to the players but not the logos or uniforms to be pictured. I get it now, the player’s association is different than MLB as a whole. You mean you need to have two separate contracts (player’s association and MLB) to be able to do both the player and the use of the teams’ logos and uniforms?

        Yes, sir.

You might have answered this (answer being it will be released later), but can we expect there to be SP’s in the autograph checklists which have been a staple of Contenders? Thanks

As soon as I get that information from Product Development, I’ll post it here.

i wish you guys would get the MLB license back
to break up the one company having the MLB license and cards!
the competition will make everyone try harder and the products will get better!

Can I get a checklist of the cards including inserts that shows what team each is assosiated with?
