2013-14 Panini Basketball Stars in Must-See Edition of Panini Unwrapped (Contest)

A certain quote from Panini America's very own Keith Hower seems quite apropos right about now: "It's the end of the day, but it's the beginning of the fun." That was Hower's way of summarizing the opportunity to bust a box of 2013-14 Panini Basketball following a long day at the office. For what it's worth, we think you'll find that opening a box of 2013-14 Panini Basketball at just about any time of the day is the beginning of the fun.

Equipped with an affordable price, a great design, splendid photography, tons of Rookie Cards and once-in-a-blue-moon chases, 2013-14 Panini Basketball has a little something for just about everyone. In the following episode of Panini Unwrapped, we illustrate that point by ripping one 24-pack box. We think you’ll like what you see. Enjoy the video, and check back afterward to find out how you can win your very own box of 2013-14 Panini Basketball.

Now that you’ve watched the video, we’re looking for a little feedback. We want to know two things: First, we want you to tell us which Oklahoma City Thunder player is guarding Derrick Rose in Rose’s Bird’s Eye View insert that’s pulled in the video. Secondly, we want you to give us one thing you’d like to see added to Panini Basketball for 2014-15.
Got it? Good luck and thanks in advance for your participation.

  1. Andre Roberson guards Derrick Rose on the Bird’s Eye View insert. A good addition for the product are game/event worn prime autographs.
    Thank you.

  2. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose on the card. For next year’s set I would like memorbillia cards added to the set. Patches and jerseys would add extra value and would add a fun chase element to the product. I would also like to see Heroes of the hall back in the product, I loved that insert last year. Thank you and have a great day!

  3. Im pretty sure i suggested about a year and a half ago the idea of having camera shots from the scoreboard!!! With the ritual cards, try and make it 3Dish so it looks like they’re walking from the locker room…maybe laser cut or embossed somehow….i think its thabo

  4. Andre Robertson is guarding D Rose I would like to see an insert set called dagger that pictures the best game winners of the season

  5. Serge Ibaka is guarding D Rose.
One thing I would like to see is something like the Spectra football HOF auto set (the holofoil look is pretty cool). Those cards are really nice!
Overall, this product is very sweet looking! Another great Panini product!

  6. The player guarding Derrick Rose in the Bird’s Eye View insert is neither KD or Thabo Sefolosha, but rather Andre Roberson.
The one thing I would add is autographed versions of the Top 10 Inserts #’d /10. With the prospects included in the top-10 of the 2014 draft those could be some very exclusive and desirable chase cards.

  7. I’ve tried and true to figure out who’s guarding Rose…to no avail. Not discouraged though, I’d still like to participate in suggestions for the next year’s product;
How about ” Dual Auto & Greats Birds eye view cards”
That would give Panini a challenge 1) to find or produce these cards & 2) have them signed

  8. 1. looks like André Roberson
    2. i would love to see large jerseys swatches or patches, or numbered parallels.

  9. 1. Andre Roberson?
    2. Special sp auto cheerleaders cards 4 or 5 of the top cheerleaders of each team that have them would be cool in any product/sport.

  10. Andre Roberson
And I would like to see a card of every player who played a game in the NBA that season. If ur gonna wait till the end of the season to release the set, u can make a card of everyone, 10-day contract guys included! thanks!!

  11. D rose is guarded by perry jones i think and i would love to see a beautiful magic johnson and mj auto patch card

  12. 1. The player is #21 Andre Roberson
    2. I think with the two autos per box, maybe add some jersey/patch cards to the product for next year.
    Thanks for the giveaway,
    Zach Matsko

  13. 1-The Thunder player guarding d. Rose is #21 Andre Roberson
2- I would like to see a card called “Original Knights” which would feature buyback autos of the throwback legends instead of just having them sign a new card

  14. It’s Andre Roberson (rookie) for the thunder. Panini basketball i the only set i do for the year and i would love to crack open a box from you guys. I would like to see photo variations, an insert set for the playoffs, some sort of top play dunk insert set, double double set, and an all star game set in 2014-2015! Love the product and keep up the amazing cards!

  15. Andre Roberson is Guarding D.Rose in the Card. I love these card breaking videos and I’d like to see more memorabilia added to the cards other than just the jerseys. (piece of the players shoes or something personal)
Thanks and keep up the good work

  16. Part 1 is #21 Andre Roberson
PART 2 for 2014-15 it would be cool to have a set called Knights Armor and it would include a piece of mem and it would be of the top nba defenders

  17. Andre Roberson is in the Rose bird’s eye view card.
What would I like to see would be Michael Jordan and other hall of famers if possible. Maybe some action dunking cards.

  18. 1. Thabo Sefolosha
    2. Would like to see low numbered parallels in the product for team collectors or player collectors

  19. I love this contest
The player guarding Derrick Rose is #21 Andre Roberson
In the 2014-15 Panini Basketball Product I would like to see some use of 3d technology and have the player looking like they are flying out of the card while they are throwing one down and make the card sort of like the old school sport flix. Have the set called Panini Explosion

  20. Well, I’m thinking that was his last healthy game against the Thunder, which was a pre-season game in Wichita. My educated guess is that is Rodney McGruder, who didn’t quite make the 12-man roster this year.
I really liked the concept of the “Super Team” cards of the 90’s by a certain company you’re probably familiar with 😉 It gave me a reason to cheer for a team I otherwise wouldn’t care about for an entire season, for a great redemption at the end of the Finals.

  21. Is it Westbrook? And something would be cool added do first pick draft pick cards half and half. Like added a older player on top and bottom with a younger player that would be neat

  22. Part 1 is #21 Andre Roberson
PART 2 is for the 2014-15 product I would include an insert set of all the bloopers and call it The PANINI COURT JESTERS

  23. I think the OKC player is Andre Roberson, and I’d like to see some of the football “Crown Royale” style cards brought to basketball. Thanks!

  24. The player guarding Derrick Rose is Andre Roberson.
An idea for next year could be a card titled “Posterized” with a player dunking on another player. Bonus cards for the “Posterized” card could be autographed.

  25. Guarding Rose: Andre Roberson
The product has a lot to offer with a low SRP. I guess some prime mem never hurts. Haven’t seen any pulled thus far.

  26. Part 1 of the contest is: #21 Andre Roberson
PART 2 of the contest: I would like to see a SP set of the upcoming rookies and have them numbered to their draft pick number. I know these boxes aren’t high end but it would be fun to add a NT or Flawless like hit in this product. I would have the cards have the draft picks wearing their hats at the podium and have a prime piece of mem on the card shaped as the number they were picked. For instance Anthony Bennett would only be the only 1/1 hit and so on all the way up to the last first round pick. I would then have an on card vertical signature and have the SP set called Panini PRIME KNIGHTS

  27. Hasheem Thabeet was guarding Rose. I’d like to see more on card rookie autos in next years Panini flagship set.

  28. 1) It looks like Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose
    2) Oversize patches are always nice, Family Business sigs would be sweet

  29. 1) Thabo Sefolosha
    2) Would like to see reproduction cards like Pistol Pete Maravich/Bill Russell and game used memorabilia cards

  30. Andre Roberson was guarding Rose in the card and I would like to see a gaurunteed hit in the box also if maybe there could be like a hot box where you would find a parallel in every pack or something. Thanks

  31. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose on the card. For next year I would like to see the knight on all of the cards, not just parallels. This is a good looking product, and as always keep up the good work!!!

  32. Andre Roberson is guarding DRose on the card and how about seeing some of the teams’ announcers autographs as a third hit every few boxes?

  33. 1. Andre Roberson is guarding D Rose.
    2. For the next year, I would love to see numbered parallels, numbered die-cuts and jersey or patch cards. And more auto! More power to Panini and Tracy! I always buy this one!

  34. First part: is it a KD, or a Sefolosha? No!
    It’s Andre Roberson!
I’m always thinking way too much about these contests and trying to think of the most perfect ideas, but it’s tough to creat or think of something really cool. Maybe you can do an insert called The Knights’ Crown or Crown Knights and it can be a tribute to past NBA Champ teams/players/MVPs or something like that. And then even have the chase Gold and Black versions of those.

  35. Wow, I am shut out on my guess. Roberson was my 1st thought, until I looked at the game’s boxscore where this picture was shot (Preseason game in Wichita on 10/23/13). Roberson (#21) played 18 minutes and McGruder (#22) played 15 minutes (nobody else even closely resembles the player on the card). McGruder is darker skinned than Roberson, and the guy in the photo has the same or very slightly darker complexion than Rose. Roberson is clearly lighter skinned than Derrick (look at his yahoo profile, and search for photos of Kansas State/Thunder SG Rodney McGruder for comparison). Curious if anyone has the factual answer on this. I’m still sticking to my answer until I am proven otherwise!! 😉 Nice cards, guys!

  36. Andre Roberson is the player “guarding” D. Rose–considering Rose scored 26 in a Bulls win no one really guarded him. I love this product because of it’s value–lots of cards for a super reasonable price–but if there was one thing I would add it would be game worn jersey cards. There has got to be chunks left over from when the swatches get cut up so use those for some low cost memorabilia cards. Awesome product once again!

  37. I am pretty sure it is Andre “don’t call me a giant” Roberson–go Buffs–guarding D. Rose. I, like other fans commenting would like to see Family Business autos and game worn memorabilia in this product. If that affected the price point though I would be thrilled with it the way it is because it really is a great bang for the buck “box of fun”! Thanks for the contest Panini!

  38. The player guarding Derrick Rose is Andre Roberson.
I would love the see something similar to the clear cut series like totally certified hockey set. Maybe a clear backboard style. Clear the backboards series. Something like that

  39. Congrats on Many Ginobili deal.
It’s Andre Roberson trying to block DRose.
Addition would be from what School are they from high lighted alma matter.
    Thanks Panini!
    🙂

  40. Looks like a number in the 20’s for jersey so going with Andre Roberson.
I think you should go with a “shaqtin a fool” insert set of the top shaqtin shots during the season with an auto from the player that is in it and quoting what their thoughts of the move is … for example, that recent Fournier one, he could inscribe “Fournier means “terrible inbound passer “in French ?!”. Anyway, plenty of good ideas above!

  41. Andre Roberson…going by all the other posts (not a b-ball guy) what i’d like is more rare chase cards like laundry tags and even cut autos be it historical figures, celebs or b-ball stars

  42. Andre Roberson is guarding Rose. Draft Redemption for the top ten players drafted would be cool, like they did back in the day. It could even have an autograph version.

  43. Andre Roberson is guarding D. Rose. Great addition to inserts next year would be cards highlighting the players nickname like King James, Uncle Drew, Manimal, Birdman etc.

  44. Based on the # on his jersey I concur that it would be Andre Roberson.
As for what I’d like to see in next year’s Panini Basketball, would be a good variety of parallels. One thing I like about many Panini products is the high quality number of parallels, especially low #’d ones. It’s a great way to add a ton of value and add to the collectability!

  45. Here is my explanation of who is guarding Derrick Rose on the Bird’s Eye View insert: since there is no paint, in the paint, the location of the game had to be a neutral location. With Derrick Rose’s injuries, he only played the Thunder one time, on 10-23-2013, in Wichita, Kansas, a preseason game against the Thunder. I have went back and found the shot chart for that game. Derrick Rose only had 3 layup attempts throughout the game: he made his first two (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt70zTQxvwA) but he missed one in the 3rd quarter (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/playbyplay?gameId=400491596&period=3) (2:57 on the clock). I went back and looked at who was playing when the missed layup occurred. Kevin Durant, Kendrick Perkins, Reggie Jackson, Nick Collison, and Andre Roberson were on the floor. Andre Roberson just checked in for Jeremy Lamb 10 seconds before the missed layup occurred. Due to process of elimination and being a diehard Oklahoma City Thunder fan (I go to college here in the city and have been a Thunder fan since Day 1), I came to the conclusion that Andre Roberson is the man guarding Derrick Rose on the Bird’s Eye View insert. #ThunderUp
A few things I’d like to see added to Panini Basketball for 2014-15 are dual autographed cards of famous duos in basketball history, you can also go with dual jersey cards of famous duos in basketball history. You can also add coaches to the base set. Let the coach’s have autographed inserts and do a famous coaches in basketball history autograph insert. You can get one of the famous coaches’ suits, cut it up, and make “jersey” cards out of it as well.

  46. I think it is Andre Roberson.
I would like to see an insert set what would feature the greatest dunks of the previous season (like DeAndre Jordans dunk against Brendon Knight),and there could be also an all time greatest dunk version of it.

  47. Andre Roberson guards Derrick Rose on the Bird’s Eye View insert.
The one thing you’d like to see added to Panini Basketball for 2014-15 is an insert set honoring the Miami HEAT for winning 3 straight NBA Championships.
This years product looks awesome and you deserve kudos for the improvements made year after year.

  48. Andre Roberson is the OKC Player who guards Derrick Rose on the Bird’s Eye View insert. I would like to see a Auto Mem Prime or not i think its a good addition to the product.

  49. 1. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose
    2. I would like to see die cuts and Allstar players and coaches Inserts in 2014-15 Panini Basketball

  50. Thanks as always for the video and contest Tracy. I believe the player guarding Derrick Rose in the Bird’s eye view is Andre Roberson. The idea I have for an insert set is called “Clocking In” where the players are photographed on their way into the arena and on the back answer what brand clothing they are wearing (like red carpet coverage at awards ceremonies in Hollywood), what songs they like to listen to regularly on the way in past the media and one pre-game activity they never miss.

  51. 1. Andre Robertson.
    2. More autos of retired players! Or since you know have the bird’s eye view insert, how about trying one from the opposite angle? From the floor looking up at the players. Just not right beneath the players. Nobody wants to see that lol.

  52. 1) Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose.
    2) Knight Swag Materials, with a cut out of the Panini Knight as the window for the material.

  53. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose.
I’d love to see autoed authentic Lettermen inserted in next year’s Panini (or even one of the other higher end products).

  54. Andre Roberson is guarding Rose.
I’d like to see the Panini set go bigger and have all the players for each team. Hoops comes out too early to do it, but this set is in the right time frame.

  55. Hi Tracy, it is Andre Robertson guarding Derrick Rose in the birds eye view insert and I would like to see a cinmagraph where you tilt the card and it looks like the player on the card is moving. You could make a card on certain players that scored important shots or high quality dunks or even skill moves and skill passes.
    Thank you.

  56. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose. We need to have some famous rival auto / relic carls. Or throw in a 1/1 original art of Michael Jordan Looney Toons autoed by artist and Michael Jordan.

  57. 1.The player guarding Derrick Rose is #21 Andre Roberson.
    2. I would like to see dual (or more players) autograph cards, die-cut cards, 3D cards and/or jersey/patch cards.

  58. Guarding D-Rose is #21 Andre Roberson.
I would like to see Panini add a playoff subset of special cards for the players making the playoffs.

  59. 1. That is definitely Andre Roberson’s haircut right there haha.
    2. I’d like the original Panini set to include some jersey cards. Growing up it was nice to hit a memorabilia card or two in the starter sets.

  60. I think the consensus is Andre Roberson, and I have to agree!
I think Panini did a great job really making the classic panini product stand out by adding new inserts that have never been done before (like Bird’s eye view, knight school, etc). It’s great to see a product have innovation while it’s also nice that other products pay tribute to retro inserts etc. But for the original panini boxes, I like the idea of adding a few new and intriguing insert cards every year!

  61. Thabo Sefolosha is guarding D-Rose in his Bird’s Eye View card.
What I’d like to see added would be dual autos of rookies & past stars from their draft teams. Not necessarily just HOF players from that team but maybe former players that played the same position. I like the connection between the past & present players from the teams.
    Great photos on these cards

  62. Andre Roberson of the Thunder
I’d like to see another type of parallel that stands out similar to the one with the all-panini foil. Just a little bit more eye-candy. I also liked the gold foil parallel. Maybe something could just accentuate that insert a little more to make it really stand out as being an insert.

  63. It is Andre Roberson in the picture with Mr. Rose. I would like to see cards of every single guy on a team in this kind of card product. I understand that with call-ups and guys signed with other companies that might be hard to do but if anyone could do it Panini can! Thanks for the chance to win a sweet box of this fine set.

  64. Andre Roberson
Similar to the Bird’s Eye View insert, you should do another insert set purely based off of hustle plays. Include photos of players diving into the stands or diving on the ground to snatch up a loose ball. That would be crazy!

  65. The player on the Derrick Rose card is Andre Roberson.
I hope the 2014-2015 Panini cards have some throwback images (like LeBron on Cleveland or Kobe wearing #8 with Shaq, or anything like that). That could be fun!

  66. Andre Roberson is guarding D-Rose in that card. I think a cool insert for 2014-15 Panini Basketball would be something to do with players with notable hairstyles, like Anderson Varejao, Iman Shumpert, Chris Andersen, Kenneth Faried, etc

  67. Hey Tracy, it’s Andre Roberson!!! I don’t blame you for not being able to tell though so no worries!
I think you should add a basic jersey/auto card! It doesn’t necessarily have to be 3 hits, but maybe some of the cards could have a jersey swatch on them if possible. It might up the ante a little!

  68. Had to spend a little bit of time online looking up people’s faces on the Thunder, and I’m pretty confident that it’s Andre Roberson!
I think the set could use a little bit of that prizm technology!

  69. Andre Roberson is the Oklahoma City Thunder player is guarding Derrick Rose in Rose’s Bird’s Eye View insert that’s pulled in the video.
I would like to see autographed pieces of game used basketball inserts added to Panini Basketball for 2014-15. 😀

  70. Andre Roberson
I think there should be some serial numbered cards! Even if it’s out of large print numbers, it’s great to know if you received something that has a perceived rarity!

  71. 1) Andre Roberson
    2) An insert set based of the best statistical players of each category of the past year and not just the normal one’s like points, rebounds, assists etc. but maybe some more obscure statistics like +/-, fg %, 3 pt %, pts/min played, wins above replacement etc. This would not only help boost the analytic side of basketball but also show some quality players that do not get the reconnection that they deserve.

  72. Hight in Fight is just one way I would describe the Pic of Andre Roberts on D-ROSE
Sad D rose is out I have his 1st Base Nat Tresures 10/10 .
I like the inserts to this years Panini a great job.
Next yr Few Nice Game Used Mem and Patches would be nice.
And A chase Insert like Higher Rhelm dedicated to Payoff /Title games game wining key Baskets.shots with a Prizm efffect that would be a nice addition
Thanks guys I have to say I haven’t been able to buy New boxes but I have to say when i think of Panini I think of Nba .
    Tom w

  73. 1. Andre Roberson
    2. 2 autos but none of them be rookies. We get enough of the rookie autos in other products. Sometimes we need more veterans!

  74. Andre Roberson for the first part
I think next year you should do a set that acknowledges past winners of contests like slam dunk champions, and other skills competition winners! You can make a sick card based off of Team East with the trio that did the dunking!

  75. Andre Roberson was guarding Derrick Rose right there!
I think Panini should go a little further with the family cards. I really like that idea of having the Curry’s together and such! Maybe you could even do a stat comparison between family members and do a side by side in categories! That would be really funny to see!
    Thank you for the contest!!!

  76. I believe it is Andre Robertson who is guarding him.
I would like to see more veteran autos..I think sometimes companies focus most on rookies which is great but I would love a product that offered me chances to get some of the “greats of the game” that could be a cool title for the cards.
Thanks for the contest and always being open to our feedback

  77. the player “trying to guard” derrick rose is andre roberson and i think a nice surprise to add would be die cut cards in the shape of the team logos foiled out with different color spectrums, and maybe make sp coach autos for each team logo.

  78. Andre Roberson is guarding D-Rose.
It would be cool to see cards with pictures of All-Star teams from previous years.

  79. 1. Andre Roberson
    2. I would like to see a “NBA Global” insert set in 2014-15 Panini Basketball that represents the top international players currently in the league. I believe this could further expand the Panini Basketball market and attract fans from various countries.

  80. 1. Andre Roberson
    2. You should do an evolution of players card. Since players these days get traded faster than you can blink, it would be really cool if you did dual/triple/quad jersey cards or something like that. Let me give an example. Take Dwight Howard and do a triple jersey card with 1 swatch from Orlando, 1 from the Lakers, and 1 from Houston. The cards would have plenty of color from the different team colors and it would look sick. I don’t think it’s ever been done like that before!

  81. Andre Roberson was guarding D-Rose.
I think you should bring back the Thunder/Lightning series type card. One person on the front and another on the back, typically teammates when you can do it.
    Thanks for another great product!!!

  82. Andre Roberson of the Thunder is guarding Derrick Rose.
I’d like to see more memorabilia from the all-star games and events added to the cards! I used to love those!

  83. Andre Roberson. I think there should be cards dedicated to the previous year’s playoff matchups! You can have player v player or team v team cards!

  84. Andre Roberson is guarding Derrick Rose. I think you should add the same thing to every series in the line up, low number 1\5 or less with huge patches. I mean huge and only like 10 to twenty top name players. That is why we buy the product, to pull something special. I know it is hard to do, because of higher price point products, but that is the reason we buy. The big hit.

  85. Hope I’m not too late to the party! It is definitely Andre Roberson guarding (or attempting to guard) Rose. This set already has so much, but one thing I would add to this set is a very rare jersey chase card.

  86. Dude doing the guarding is Andre Robinson…I love to see the old names, the old jerseys, and then the new dudes…then and now maybe…future and past stars…great stuff

  87. Andre Roberson is guarding DRose! This is probably one of the funnier contests I’ve ever seen here haha. “Guess the professional athlete and win a prize!” 😀
I’d like to the the panini boxes next year take the family cards and turn it into a dual auto or dual mem card. Imagine getting a triple auto card of Dell, Stephen, and Seth Curry all on one card! Or even find old memorabilia and do both Ewings or Hardaways! That would be very unique and definitely add some flavor to the awesome insert set that now exists.

  88. Andre Roberson is guarding rose. I would like to see some of the rarer inserts that are case hits numbered and some game used cards would be nice in this product

  89. Andre Roberson is my guess
An acetate card featuring hall of fame players would be great or a metal card would be a great addition. The hockey leaf limited in the 1900’s used to include a metal card. I haven’t seen one since
    Robert

  90. another suggestion: game used sneaker with autograph for high end products.. (part of the logo of nike with auto seems nice)

  91. andre roberson is guarding derrick rose, suggestion include redemption signed shoes 1/1 of the finest nba players

  92. 1. Roberson Guarding D. Rose
    2. Suggestion: Parallel card: Red, Orange Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. all cards numbered to 50.

  93. Thanks to everyone for the great ideas and feedback. We do appreciate it. For this particular contest, I solicited the help of Panini NBA folks Keith Hower and Lucas Kinser to select the winners. Congratulations to David P., RLHilliard44, Colin Giustino, Grady Malachowski and Jim Catalano. Thanks again to everyone for participating. Winners, we’ll be in touch to get your addresses.
