Prime Time: Panini America Begins Cutting 2012-13 Prime Hockey (Video & Gallery)

August 8, 2013

Panini America 2012-13 Prime Hockey Cuts Main

In a far back corner of Panini America HQ, tucked away in a remote section of the company’s massive acquisitions vault, NHL product developers Chris Barr, Karvin Cheung and Matthew Davis in June began the arduous process of handcrafting 2012-13 Prime Hockey. To be sure, the highly anticipated follow-up to one of last season’s most successful new products will have far to go to top that maiden launch.

Few will argue with the fact that the Prime Colors insert from last season’s Prime Hockey delivered some of the most breathtaking memorabilia cards in hockey history. But equipped with just the right game-worn memorabilia, steady hands and accurate measurements, raising the bar on that super-premium staple is not just a possibility, it’s a foregone conclusion.

During the June Universal Distribution open house in Montreal, Panini America stole the show not just by delivering special guest Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens, but also by presenting a wow-inducing video that details just how painstaking and precise a product like Prime Hockey has to be.

Today, we present that video for your enjoyment and edification. Be sure to stick around after the video for a captivating gallery of the memorabilia that’s been cut so far for the product. And stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional coverage of 2012-13 Prime Hockey.

Thank You so much Panini for releasing this video. I love the behind the scenes videos to show us what really goes on and how the cards are produced. And to Chris, I would not mind if my job were to select and cut patches that are going into a great product like prime. Especially if the patches are from legendary players such as Selanne and Lemieux!

After close examination, I can safely say that the dirtiest patch belongs to Jonathan Toews, it is the patch beside his captain’s “C”.

These jersey patches from the new Prime look awesome as did last years. My only disappointment is that some of the players featured (Seguin for example) have already been traded away to other teams. The price point makes this a very cost prohibitive product lending more to the ebay box breakers then individuals 😦

Stunning! Growing leaps and bounds. By far one of the better products out now.

Last year some of the cards didn’t look as nice as they could have because the card design covered up the nicer-looking parts of the swatch whereas the other side would be unobstructed but not as nice-looking. Any plans to address this for this year? Another idea is to have the card designs all be oriented in the same way, or arranged in some other sort of pattern, for any particular patch set. For example, for a set out of 4, the designs could all be facing the same way, or even better have the 2 left cards face a certain direction and the 2 right cards face the opposite. Combining this with the first suggestion, the card design would be such as to only cover some of the jersey portions of the swatch letting the patch stick out even more. These two ideas would make the cards look better both individually and as a whole.

Great video and I really liked how you guys showed collectors the procedure to making these drooling patches. 12-13 Prime is going to be a very successful product!
