Panini America Honors Classic 1982 Design with Insert in 2016 Donruss Baseball

Panini America 2016 Donruss Baseball 1982 Insert1

Panini America’s iconic 2016 Donruss Baseball arrives on Wednesday in hobby shops across North America boasting the kind of nostalgia, fun, value and old-school charm that only more than 30 years of history can produce. (It also includes a few ruffled feathers compliments of The Famous San Diego Chicken . . . but we’ll get to that a little later.)

And perhaps no one insert in the product best summarizes all of those things quite like the 50-card 1982 chase, a set that combines compelling — and sometimes offbeat — photography, the classic 1982 Donruss Baseball design and a checklist filled with the best players of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

To help properly prepare you for Wednesday’s release, we showcase every card in the 1982 insert in the gallery that follows. Enjoy the sneak peek and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for continued coverage of 2016 Donruss Baseball, including a can’t-miss “Making Of” video starring the legendary and aforementioned Famous San Diego Chicken.

I’ve enjoyed Donruss since it’s return, although both previous years there were things I wanted to see improved. For 2014, I was disappointed that a factory set was issued including SPs that I had spent time and money tracking down. That was fixed with 2015 by eliminating the factory set (although my preference would have been eliminating the SPs). Last year’s issue was the number of SPs increasing to 95 in a 245 card set, which I was afraid would repeat this year. Looks like that won’t be the case, with the 1982 throwbacks numbered as a separate insert. Good move. I like the look of these inserts and may end up tracking down a good number of them, but I’m glad I don’t have to get all of them just to complete the base set.

My suggestion for now would be to bring back a late summer Series 2 extension / update to bring up the set size a bit more. I think a 400-500 card set (even if split across two series) would be ideal. I wouldn’t mind having another wrapper redemption for additional Rated Rookies like we did in 2014 either.

Looking forward to ripping some Donruss this week. Thanks for the previews.
