Panini America Produces a Flawless Tribute to Late Timberwolves Coach Flip Saunders

October 5, 2016

When beloved Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders passed away in October of 2015 due to complications from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the tragic news shook the NBA and left an irreplaceable void in the very heart of the Timberwolves’ franchise. Saunders was more than just a head coach. He was the organization’s President of Basketball Operations, a minority owner and the man credited with rebuilding the club.

Simply, he meant more to Minnesota than just about any other coach has ever meant to any other team. As the league and its players mourned Saunders in those somber days following his passing, the Timberwolves announced that the team would honor their fallen leader by wearing a commemorative “Flip” jersey patch throughout the 2015-16 season.

This week, 13 of those game-worn patches — and the Timberwolves players who wore them — are featured in the unique Flip Saunders Tribute set randomly inserted in Panini America’s new 2015-16 Flawless Basketball.

Each card in the set is a true one of a kind that features the complete “Flip” patch from a game-worn jersey donned by the featured Timberwolves player on the card. But perhaps even more poignant is the emotional back of each card, which includes imagery and text specific to each player’s connection to Saunders.

We showcase many of the backs in the gallery that follows. Enjoy this look at a Flawless tribute to an NBA legend.

Great looking cards with fantastic backs – and such a tasteful, well done tribute to honor Flip and the connection he shared with the players and how the team recognized his importance with the special patch.

These are great…love the fact that tribute is being paid on cards. Everybody loved Flip it seems to me.

Amazing tribute, and thank you for posting the backs to read through. Hoping Kevin Martins caption is just a typo in the mockup.
