JUSTIN LAZERSON OF OCEANSIDE, NY WINS 2022 PANINI NBA PLAYER OF THE DAY NATIONAL SWEEPSTAKES
12-year-old collector surprised with news at special event with friends and family at The Card Shack in Lynbrook.
OCTOBER 27, 2022 – An estimated 100,000 card collectors at more than 600 hobby shops nationwide participated in the 2022 Panini NBA Player of the Day promotion between March and June. And, although tens of thousands of prizes were awarded, 12-year-old Justin Lazerson of Oceanside, NY was the lucky collector who parlayed his pack of Panini NBA trading cards into the grand prize. Additionally, 10 lucky collectors were selected as first prize winners and 25 collectors earned second prize. The complete national sweepstakes winner’s list is posted HERE.
On Monday (10/24) Panini America, Justin’s parents and Steve Cardi, the owner of The Card Shack – Justin’s favorite hobby shop – surprised him with the news under the guise of him winning a runner-up prize. Surrounded by friends and family including his parents, sister, grandparents, aunt and uncle, Justin was speechless when he heard the news. Panini presented Justin with a selection of NBA Player of the Day autographed cards for his collection including: Kawhi Leonard (#/2); Magic Johnson (#/3); Deandre Ayton (#/5); Dennis Rodman (#/10) and Tracy McGrady (#/10).
“We congratulate Justin as our 2022 NBA Player of the Day national sweepstakes winner and look forward to putting together a fun and memorable experience to enhance his enjoyment collecting NBA trading cards,” said Jason Howarth, vice president of marketing for Panini America. “We also want to thank Steve Cardi and the 600 other hobby shop proprietors all across the country who run the player of the day promotion every year.”
Justin also learned that during the NBA season, he will receive the rest of his grand prize including a unique VIP experience with an NBA player, a $250 shopping spree at The Card Shack and more NBA cards and autographs from Panini. Additionally, Panini will provide a special prize to The Card Shack to share with their loyal customers.
“I was very surprised when I won the contest at The Card Shack and received an RJ Barrett autographed card because I only pulled the player of the day twice during the month, first it was Kevin Durant and then Bradley Beal. I assumed there were others who had a better chance by pulling the player of the day more than me,” explained Justin. “I never expected to win the national sweepstakes. I want to thank Panini for selecting me as the winner.”
Like many kids his age, Justin loves basketball. He collects NBA trading cards, plays on a rec league team and, as a fan, he inherited his father’s love of the Lakers, and his favorite player is Anthony Davis.
“We are excited for Justin as well as his friends and family,” said Cardi. “We have run the player of the day for both the NBA and NFL every year it has been offered and it has been great for our business in both promoting sales and encouraging engagement with our customers. A few years ago, one of our customers was selected as a first prize winner in the NFL national sweepstakes, but this is the first time we have had a sweepstakes winner for the NBA edition. For it to be the grand prize winner is surreal.”
The Panini NBA Player of the Day promotion was first offered to hobby shops in 2016 while the NFL edition has run every season since 2001. Past NBA Player of the Day Grand Prize winners have had one-on-one experiences with Karl-Anthony Towns, Shaquille O’Neal, Aaron Holiday, Matisse Thybulle, RJ Barrett and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The centerpiece of the promotion is a poster featuring Panini card images of one player from each NBA team. Each day, a different player on the poster is designated as the “Panini NBA Player of the Day.” Every time a collector purchases a pack of officially licensed Panini NBA trading cards and pulls the player of the day, they win a prize. Each week, stores conduct a drawing from the daily winners to award a weekly prize.
