Between the Sheets: Panini America Offers Uncut Looks at 2012-13 Select, Marquee

By now, it likely goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway: Working at Panini America provides a seemingly never-ending stream of fascinating sights, sounds and developments. One day it's Ty Cobb bat knobs and game-worn Robert Griffin III jerseys. The next, it's Gordie Howe autographs and Kobe Bryant game-worn shoes.

Panini America Select Marquee Basketball Sheets (40)

By now, it likely goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway: Working at Panini America provides a seemingly never-ending stream of fascinating sights, sounds and developments. One day it’s Ty Cobb bat knobs and game-worn Robert Griffin III jerseys. The next, it’s Gordie Howe autographs and Kobe Bryant game-worn shoes.

But on many days, including today, some of the coolest spectacles aren’t pieces of sweat-soaked memorabilia or hand-scrawled history. Instead, they’re massive pieces of colorful cardboard delivered fresh from the printer, uncut sheets filled with varying technologies that are used to illustrate the look and feel of upcoming releases.

Today, that meant we were treated to some flat-out filthy first looks 2012-13 Select Basketball (and its take on Panini America’s Prizm technology) and 2012-13 Marquee Basketball (featuring the mesmerizing “Swirlorama” finish). And as coincidence would have it, we also got a peek at finished (but as yet unsigned) Select cards of Bryant and Kevin Durant.

Clearly these technologies are better seen than explained, so we present the following gallery as our show-and-tell project for the day. Enjoy, and please let us know your thoughts.

  1. Great to see the old Select font being used again, reminds me of the 95 Terrell Davis rookies that were all the craze for a while (figured a Broncos reference would be well-received by a certain writer/moderator I know). The swirls are borderline pscyhadellic and should add a nice new element to the basketball parallel craze. Thanks Tracy!

  2. Nice looking cards, but is that a huge crease in the bottom left corner of the Damian Lillard card and top of the Kyrie Irving? Sorry it just caught my eye. lol

    1. It is indeed. Those uncut sheets can be rather unwieldy to transport and even more difficult to properly photography without catching light in the wrong place. In the interest of full disclosure, I think I may have made that crease myself with a knee as I was trying to awkwardly straddle the sheet while taking some pics. And I apologize.

      1. I’m sure something like that has happened to all of us at one time or another. Chances are whatever it is we damaged was nowhere near as cool, though!

      2. You can just autograph the crease Tracy and I am sure anyone that pulled that card would be excited. I would like to have it in my collection.

  3. Intriguing design, and really well done! Taking a mock-up…a computer-generated wanna-be card, and escorting it from brain-child to compelling and sought-after non-mem’ insert? That’s a labor of love and commitment. Towards that end, I’m loving the “Marquee” sub-set. Reminds me of a pair of Fraternity brothers who painted their room in similar fashion… you needed to knock-back some Dramamine before entering their room. I digress.
I have read posts from a number of community members requesting that the company place a greater emphasis upon precisely this; innovative sub-sets crafted upon a scaffold of new print technology! Hackler & Co., I’m impressed. Can’t wait to see more.

  4. Looks great, especially the Marquee and rookie Prizms.

But hey, that top image of Lillard’s Marquee looks damaged in the bottom left corner of the card. Can you see that ripple/fold in the surface? Pretty sure its not the swirlorama playing tricks on my eyes.

Cheers yall, looking forward to the product very much.

  5. Great preview!
    Love it!
Just amazing technology placed into this cards!
Proud to be a Panini Supporter
Thanks for the preview Tracy Getting some goose bumbs while looking at it.

  6. Really Really NICE ! What is the Pack/Box breakdown on this set gonna be? Will it be Hobby Only or Any Retail available? I definitely LIKE these Cards. Especially the In Flight Cards (cool concept with the airport abbreviation). Nicely Done.

  7. Tracy Select and Marquee look Amazing! I’m so pumped to rip open some boxes! Keep up the great work Panini!

  8. Wowee! Those “Swirlorama” sheets look brilliant! Mount em in a nice UV proof frame and put em on a wall where they occasionally catch the sun they would look BRILLIANT!! Those select cards are also very awesome!

  9. Love the Dr J. Marquee card. Looks like the same shot from a large poster I had when I was a kid. I believe he was finger-rolling or dunking over Larry Bird if I am not mistaken in the poster. Cool card one way or the other.

  10. Very cool twist up! I haven’t seen anything like this yet since I started collecting last year! I like it a lot! Is there any die cut cards?
