Gaining Momentum: Panini America Shares New Addition to 2012-13 NBA Roster

The Panini America NBA Product Development team has taken a page from the playbook of its NFL brethren and tweaked it -- considerably. So while football collectors who crossover to basketball will notice many aesthetic similarities between 2012 Momentum Football and the upcoming 2012-13 Momentum Basketball, they'll notice some huge differences when the hoops version releases in late April, too.

The Panini America NBA Product Development team has taken a page from the playbook of its NFL brethren and tweaked it — considerably. So while football collectors who crossover to basketball will notice many aesthetic similarities between 2012 Momentum Football and the upcoming 2012-13 Momentum Basketball, they’ll notice some huge differences when the hoops version releases in late April, too.

Most notably, they’ll notice the presence of five autograph cards in every 15-card pack — an ink-heavy configuration that should add a decided pop to a product that will carry a $200 pack SRP.

2012-13 Momentum Basketball features a 300-card base set (including 85 Rookie Cards) and three unique autograph inserts (Momentous Autographs, Momentous Rookies Autographs and Monumental Marks). The most substantial of those is the massive Monumental Marks that’s slated to include 300 cards.

Other preliminary highlights of the product include the uniquely die-cut Force insert and the etched-foil brilliance of the Drive parallel. We’ll have tons more to share on 2012-13 Momentum Basketball as the April 8 ship date approaches, so stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for updates. But for now, enjoy this preliminary sneak peek:

  1. Very Cool As Always Tracy!
Would the card Of Hornets be changed to Pelicans or stay as a Hornets Card?
    Thanks for the advance preview!

  2. Nice addition to the stable of Panini products and twist to the allignment from the football release. Thanks Tracy!

  3. Momentus Rookies look amazing but Panin i will alienate many collectors with sticker autos on any product that starts at $200 msrp. Might as well crack 2 or even three boxes of mid end product at that price point #truth, not Paul Pierce.

    1. Dave, I completely agree. I’m very surprised to see the Kobe auto’d card used in this promo is actually a sticker auto. I thought Kobe stuff was ALWAYS going to be hard signed but we know that’s not true (see the past two issues of Hoops). I would rather have less products with more on-card autos than more products with more sticker autos and more redemptions.

So far this year, there have been Hoops, Prestige, Threads, Certified, Prizm, Limited, Absolute, Contenders & Timeless Treasures (am I forgetting any other 12-13’s?). Still to come are Elite, Panini regular, Select, Preferred, Gold Standards, National Treasures and I guess Momentum. That’s 16 NBA releases from one company in one season. I don’t believe one of the products can boast of having no sticker autos.

Another piece of the issue is the matter of redemption cards. The redemption cards all have an expiration date on them that seems to be about 18 months from date of release. Most of these products (at least the ones released so far) have many, many redemptions in them. What becomes of these boxes a year and a half down the road when all the redemptions are expired? I have busted some Gold Standard from 11-12 and hit boxes with four, count ’em rour, redemptions. Imagine busting a box like that after the redemptions are expired. I’d be a tad upset.

  4. Looks great Tracy! I love Momentum FB and busted 5 or 6 boxes but because you guys twirked it a little bit and added 5 autos per box instead of mem cards, I will be busting even more boxes of Basketball! Great job in doing that. I don’t speak for all collectors but I myself(kids too) love more INK and less mem cards unless the mem cards has an auto too! LOL. Keep up the great work Panini and my girls and I will do our part and keep buying boxes! Panini’s #1
