Kings Goalie Jonathan Quick Has One Word for Collectors Holding His Redemptions

And that one word is a succinct, sincere, hand-scribbled "Sorry!" He wrote it earlier this week -- fittingly atop a redemption card for one of his Jumbo Jersey Autographs from 2012-13 Limited Hockey -- during a Panini America signing when the Los Angeles Kings were in town to play the Dallas Stars.

And that one word is a succinct, sincere, hand-scribbled “Sorry!” He wrote it last week — fittingly atop a redemption card for one of his Jumbo Jersey Autographs from 2012-13 Limited Hockey — during a Panini America signing session when the Los Angeles Kings were in town to play the Dallas Stars.

The card instantly became a compelling conversation piece even before he autographed the bottom of it. But Quick did much more than offer a written apology to collectors during his time with Panini America officials. He got a crash course in the redemption card process, and signed some cards — including Social Signatures and Inscriptions — for upcoming releases.

Heck, the Stanley Cup champion was even so accommodating as to film a special edition of Panini Unwrapped with Panini America NHL Brand Manager Chris Barr. Fittingly, the duo busted 2012-13 Limited Hockey, a box on which Quick is featured and that he signed after the break.

We’ll have much more on our sit-down with Quick in the coming days right here on The Knight’s Lance. But for now, we thought you’d appreciate the fact that Quick understands the uneasiness and inconvenience that often accompanies redemption cards — and that he’s sorry about it.

  1. Awesome. I’ve always wondered how cognizant players are of the redemption process. Do most players know that when they delay in signing their cards entire products (and ultimately, the collectors) suffer? Is there any incentive for players to sign and return their cards promptly or punishment (in terms of fees) if they do not return them within an allotted period of time?

  2. Wait, Wait you mean a professional athlete, a superstar one at that, actually issued a public apology to their fan base and wasnt prompted to? (Eyes roll into back of head and loud thump) WHEW ok iam ok. No in all realness though that was a classy move and I already know its appreciated by everyone. Hope he stays one of the good guys because I have met some doozies .

  3. So the professional athlete says he’s sorry yet Panini never does. It is your job to fulfill these redemptions Panini! How’s Julio Jones coming along?

  4. Pretty cool entry. Any chance you could walk us through the process of how the athletes commit to signing through the redemption process? I think it would be fascinating to learn how that works…or is this a trade secret?

    1. Once we reach agreement with a player, he obviously has committed to signing for us and we proceed with adding him to the checklist. After that, it’s just a matter of getting him his cards or stickers to sign and then returned to us for placement in the products. When those autographs aren’t available (for any number of reasons) by the time a certain product packs out, then we reluctantly must issue Redemption Cards for that player. The commitment does not change only our time frame for being able to deliver his autographs.

  5. Excellent job by Mr. Quick identifying that his fans deserved this issue addressed, I’d like to see this as a trend among athletes when this occurs. Thanks for the write-up on it Tracy, I’ll be looking forward to the video like the others who commented above.

  6. Nice!…If Quick Says Iam Sorry for a redemption that is only a few months late, I wonder what Jonathan Toews is going to do for a redemption that is 23 Months old after release date?…Nice to see some players realize who their fans are, and a sorry sometimes goes a long way. I have a lot more respect for him now after this post. BTW Mr. Toews….I am still waiting for my redemption 15 months after I pulled it. Thanks Tracy for this article, Great Insight!
