Panini America offered a stealthy first look at something called “Black Gold Football” the day before Christmas by using the product’s base-card design to showcase the Week 16 Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week nominees. The simple tease immediately piqued collector interest that has only gained momentum in the weeks since. Today, we offer a much more revealing look at 2014 Black Gold Football, a new addition to the Panini America NFL product portfolio that seems equipped to make a long, illustrious run.

Although 2014 Black Gold Football incorporates influences from previous Panini America brands such as Black Football and Gold Standard Football, the high-end product also packs a staggering assortment of its own innovation, too. The decadent result, as you’ll see below, should resonate throughout the football card arena.

Each four-card pack (two packs per box) will deliver one Shadowbox base or parallel card; one autograph, dual-autograph or autograph memorabilia card; one additional autograph, memorabilia card, dual-autograph or Gold Standard 14-karat gold disc card, and one Metal Logo card.

Set to release in late February, 2014 Black Gold Football features an impressive array of highlights. Among them . . .

  • Rookie Autograph Jerseys featuring oversized memorabilia pieces and autographs signed in gold ink; also find Patch, Tag, Nike Swoosh and NFL Shield 1/1 versions.
  • Golden Opportunity dual-memorabilia cards featuring the present and future of the NFL, including Tag 1/1 variations.
  • Gold-ink, on-card autographs featured extensively in Black Gold Autographs and Black Gold Rookie Autographs inserts.
  • Rookie Tetrad Shadowbox cards feature four pieces of memorabilia from the NFL’s top rookies in a set that also includes rare Tag and Patch variations.
  • The Gold Standard insert marks the NFL return of cards featuring an embedded disc of real gold; look for rare Team Logo and NFL Shield versions with logos emblazoned into the gold.
  • Black Gold features an all-acetate Shadowbox base set that includes 50 veterans, 15 Legends, 35 Rookies and some of the most unique 1/1 Printing Plates the hobby has ever seen.
  • Gold Strike Autographs features signatures from some of the NFL’s top players.
  • The spectacular Sizeable Signatures insert features on-card autographs and enormous swatches of rookie memorabilia on cards numbered to 199 or less; also look for scarce Tag, Nike Swoosh and NFL Shield 1/1 versions.
  • Every pack includes one metallic Team or NFL Logo card honoring the top players of the past, present and future numbered to 149; Black Gold versions are numbered to just five.

We’ll have plenty more on the fascinating 2014 Black Gold Football in the coming weeks here on The Knight’s Lance. Until then, though, feast your eyes on the following preview gallery, which features some early mock-ups as well as the world-premiere reveal of Sizeable Signatures cards that just arrived to Panini America HQ late yesterday afternoon.
