As the 2011-12 NBA season enters its final, championship-clinching weeks, last night’s NBA Draft Lottery selection process unofficially signaled the international basketball focus ever so slightly shifting toward the 2012-13 NBA season.
And nothing can usher in the start of next season quite like the new-card smell of the year’s first NBA trading card release: 2012-13 NBA Hoops.

Due out in August, 2012-13 NBA Hoops will once again tip off the basketball collecting season with a bang, delivering a massive 300-card base set including 72 true Rookie Cards, the celebrated first live RCs for members of both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 draft classes.
Playing on the hottest elements of last season’s NBA Hoops release, the new version will include the ultra-scarce Kevin Durant insert (a nod to 2011-12’s Black Mamba and Blake Superior scorchers), autographed BuyBacks of original 1989-90 Hoops cards and a short-printed Champions base card. Each 36-pack hobby box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops will deliver two autographs.
New additions to the 2012-13 insert lineup include Draft Night Signatures, Kobe’s All-Rookie Team, Rookie Impact and Spark Plugs.
We’ll have much more on 2012-13 NBA Hoops right here on The Knight’s Lance in the coming weeks. Until then, though, enjoy this extended first look at 2012-13 NBA Hoops.

  1. Great looking stuff. Love the silver signature on the David Robinson. Great idea on the Durantula the Black Mamba and Blake Superior were great ad ons.
Once again a very affordable product, 2 auto hits in a box, tons of nice looking inserts and more. Can’t go wrong with this product.
And you can’t forget about the NBA Baller Beats

  2. Finally! One question, will any of the key rookies from the 2011 Draft class be included, namely Isiah Thomas of the Kings?

  3. Quick Question: So the 2011-12 rookie autos (like Kyrie and Derrick Williams) in this years products will be considered “True Rookie” Autographs? I enjoyed the thought of only having 3 autograph sets (Gold Standard, Limited, Past/Present). It would have brought the value of each rookie up along with the fact that the 2012-13 product run wouldn’t be flooded with rookie autographs.
    Still a nice set…and CHEAP!

  4. I think the new hoops thats coming out is a huge step up from last year!!! The look of it has the supreme look of Hoops wit a little more of a spark!!! And i love what they did with the cover my boy Durant and the Durantula insert card as well, SMOKIN!!! Nice Tracy

  5. Don’t get me wrong Kobe is probably in the All Time Top 10; but you guys are killing the card market with Kobe Autographs and Kobe specific sets. Look at Gold Standard you had 15 variations of Kobe 24 Karat and plenty of other cards with his signature. The value of his cards of falling drastically due to overproduction. Please move on to someone else to promote your product.

    1. Budd, It’s safe to state that Bryant is comfortably ensconced within the game’s top-10 of all-time, arguably top-5. Accordingly, given his Hall of Fame in-waiting status coupled with his game, he assumed the branding mantle shed by Jordan. I don’t disagree with your assessment, that the Hobby suffers from a Kobe-saturation. His career-longevity and sheer relevance contribute to the auto glut. But, aside from Kobe, LeBron and perhaps Durant… who is capable of carrying the hobby?; whose auto & face…whose on AND off-court image can carry and sell a brand? Blake Griffin, Wade, CP3, Derrick Rose & other members of Roundball royalty have been saddled with the task, but only Kobe and LeBron have flourished. The truth of the matter is that, aside from Magic, Bird, Dr. J and Kareem, the game’s retired legends lack the overall collectability and fail to generate big dollar sales the way they do for Baseball and Football products. The pool of NBA players that generate excitement is far smaller than that of even Hockey.

  6. I’ve been very critical of how Panini decided to handle rookie cards last year with its double redemption program but I like everything I see and read about 2012-13 Hoops. I hope that the 2011-12 rookie cards have the same look as the current Hoops product with a second card using the new 2012-13 style. That would be perfect! I’m back on board Panini and looking forward to August!

  7. Please always highlight the autographs! Admiral’s auto over his photo just doesnt show his signature right, cannot see it clearly. Thank you!

  8. Looks cool, but 72 rookies doesn’t seem like enough (oddly). 30 teams x 2 rounds = 60 draftees x 2 for two rookie crops = 120 new nba players. Of course a number Euro guys stay overseas and some in the second round will not make the final rosters. Also, a few undrafted guys make NBA rosters (Lin). Just wondering where the 72 number from. Thanks Tracy.

  9. I like the look of the cards, can’t wait for it to come out.
Tracy, I have a design question for you. Is there a particular reason why you guys don’t use a little more foil for some designs? Not just the names, but for the design of the card. For instance, a card like this (sorry it’s not a Panini product). The only place I really remember seeing much foil in any Panini products are the higher end stuff. Is it because of cost? Your printers? Just don’t like foil too much?
And taking that lead, will there also be an insert in this set similar to last years where the collectors get to choose the insert set? And will users be able to submit their own designs? Sorry for all the questions, my mind races before lunch. 🙂

  10. I am loving it so far! FINALLY DURANT IS ON THE COVER! I got so tired of looking at Kobe whenever the HOOPS came out lol… I am highly impressed what you all have done at Panini. I got back into the hobby about 3 months ago & I am currently wrapping up both, NBA HOOPS & Past and Present sets. Living in Tulsa, OK & being a huge OKC Thunder fan it’s sad we are now down to 1 shop in the Tulsa area. BUT that 1 shop has got to be top in the nation when it comes to how they run it. I have never met nicer people at S and S Sports Cards. I love what yall are doing with the designs lately. The NBA Hoops had a decent look to it but it didn’t blow my mind… Yall had me sold when I opened my first Past and Present box. I will be a Panini collector for life now! Keep up the great work you guys! Can’t wait to see what yall came up with for your up & coming releases. Try and make it to a Thunder game will ya Tracy?! It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before! THUNDER UP!!!!!

  11. When will see a checklist? What inserts will be in this set? Please say you’re bringing back Hall of Fame Heroes. Also, will the fans get to pick another insert set like A Night to Remember this year?
