Perhaps no other trading cards in the staggering arsenal of possibilities dotting the 2010-11 National Treasures Basketball checklist generated more buzz last summer than three limited redemptions promising the world’s first certified autograph trading cards of legendary NBA coach Phil Jackson.
Most of the excitement generated by those redemptions stemmed from the fact that Jackson, who won 11 NBA titles while coaching the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, had never appeared on an autographed trading card. But at least part of the buzz came from a certain faction of collectors who felt that the mere thought of Jackson’s John Hancock on cardboard was simply too good to be true.
But on Friday, after months of Panini America Acquisitions department officials working directly with Jackson, the dream cards came true. The company began shipping finished cards — one limited to five and including autographs from Jackson and Kobe Bryant, another limited to five and including autographs from Dennis Rodman and Jackson, and one limited to two and featuring autographs from Jackson, Rodman, Ron Harper and Toni Kukoc — to those collectors who’ve been waiting on pins and needles.
The cards are bona fide history-makers, and you can get your first look at them in the gallery that follows.
A Phil/Jordan would obviously be the coupe de grace
That would truly be epic.
Unreal looking cards, he’s one of the best ever!
14 total cards and you couldn’t have him sign on-card?
Nice design, should have been on card.
Does this mean more Phil Jackson autos to come? That would be nice
Stay tuned on that one.
Awesome! One of the greatest coaches ever. Too bad being a Knicks fan…don’t care for him lol. Watching him and Jordan win every year….it was very upsetting.
I guess you are too young to remember the Zen Master helping the Knicks win two championships in the 70s as a player. You’re welcome.
Too young? I’m 42, man! I’m aware of those two titles he won as a player, but since the cards honor his career as a coach, I only referenced his 11 coaching championships.
Appreciate the assist, though, for those folks who didn’t know.
Tracy are you also Matt Gilman?
No, I’m not Matt Gilman. But I know Matt. Good dude.
Ok, you confused me for a minute.
Truly history-making cards.
Well done Panini, well done.
Look at that MUSTACHE!
That is inspired!
An MJ/Jackson pairing would be absurd, but the Worm/Phil duo is really neat. I’m “dually” moved!
is this on card or sticker auto>
This card incorporates stickers.
Very, very cool. Legend…wait for it…dary.
Invariably some of these will hit Ebay but once they sell you would have to imagine they will be going into a collection never to see the light of day again.
Love these!!! Kukoc and Rodman is a GREAT pairing!!!
dennis rodman’s auto is terrible.
