Panini America to Roll Out Live Redemption Trade-Up Program at the 2012 National

Panini America officials on Tuesday announced that the company will introduce a groundbreaking Live Redemption Trade-Up program during next month’s 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

The unique initiative will be conducted live at the Panini America booth and will afford those collectors in attendance holding multiple outstanding redemption cards four months or older the opportunity to trade them in for a card or cards of higher value.

For example, a collector holding four outstanding redemption cards with a combined Beckett value of $100 will have the chance to swap those four cards for one $100 card via a carefully constructed grab-bag system. Prior to the National, the Panini America Customer Service team will assign values to replacement stock and will offer grab bags containing one autograph or prime memorabilia card at $50, $100 and $200 levels.

Each grab bag will offer minimum values at the depicted levels but many will deliver more than the listed value. Some $50 grab bags will contain cards valued at as much as $80; $100 grab bags will contain cards valued at as much as $140 and $200 grab bags will contain cards valued at as much as $250. Each grab bag may also include live onsite redemption cards good for boxes of product.

The Panini America Redemption Trade-Up program will be separated by sport, and collectors will get to choose what sport they select as a replacement.

In order to help expedite the process, collectors participating in the Panini America Redemption Trade-Up program are encouraged to bring with them print outs from the Panini America Website of the outstanding redemptions they want to have replaced at the National. A Customer Service team member onsite will verify the outstanding redemptions as well as their values, before completing the replacement process.

Each redemption card being swapped out must be a minimum of four months old and collectors may swap out up to $400 in value at the show while supplies last. Collectors also will be required to sign a waiver that states they agree to the random pulled replacement.

The Panini America Redemption Trade-Up program will begin Wednesday, August 1, and will run from 5-8 p.m. Stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance, Facebook and Twitter for additional details and times, including a preview of the cards that will be available in the program.

  1. This sounds like a great idea and many will take Panini up on this offer. Although, I think this same opportunity should be available to all people with overdue outstanding redemptions. Many collectors cannot afford such a trip and should be afforded the same type of opportunity. Just my opinion and thoughts but I do support this initiative 100% regardless.

      1. Someone posted today on Beckett.com information about what another card company was doing at the National as it relates to redemptions.

The reason why I said this (Panini’s) announcement seemed expected is because while you guys do the weekly updates for redemptions on the blog, there are still some outstanding ones. However, I think of the ideas, yours (Panini’s) wins as far as I can tell. Allowing people to trade up (preferably for cards that don’t have redemptions) rather than the stuff the other company is requiring people to do seems better. Too bad I don’t have old redemptions (never had to redeem a card, phew) to compare both. 🙂

  2. What are you going to do about cards that do not have a Beckett value due to scarcity (typically less than 25)?

    1. I will be onsite assessing the value. If we can reach an agreement on value, then we can proceed with the replacement options.

  3. Will there be a similar opportunity online since as noted above not everyone will be able to make it to the show. There are 3 or 4 redemption’s that I would trade in, including the one submitted on 12/12/10 (2010 Panini Certified Mirror Blue Freshman Fabric Dexter McCluster /50) which is not a must have…

  4. i think this is a step in the right direction…would be cool if something could ever be put in place to do the same kind of thing with our LCS

  5. awesome idea, what a great way for collectors to cash in those older redemptions. Also agree with samb82.

  6. thats great for those that can attend but for us that can’t and have been waiting 2 years not so good, and what i’ve seen from the latest in a case break 27 redemptions in the case, just saying maybe slow down on product release, paying 100.00 and getting three redemption and 1 jersey not to good

  7. This is good too, but your redemption must be as least 4 months old. Plus it’s while supplies last. Basically it’s no telling how many trade ups are available. They may only have 10-20 packs that equal $100, so you might still not be able to trade up the redemption. It’s the early bird method, lol.

  8. This is a wonderful idea but like the rest of the comments say, maybe panini should have used these “trade up cards” to replace the ones online. I do understand that this promotion is meant to reward people for showing up.
The small hicup i see is that someone will roll up into nationals with a 5month old redemption and be rewarded with a even BETTER card while I know there are people online that have outstanding redemptions for over a year and will only eventually receive the card…with no extra “value”.
Like I said, this is a step in the right direction, which is something i will commend Panini on. Wish i could make it up there…!!

  9. One of your competitors is doing the same thing at the National, except they are letting those with expired redemrpions to turn them in to win other prizes. I wish something like this was done for some of us who had to wait out your customer service issues last year and this year.

  10. Definitely a step in the right direction. Cannot wait to hear the buzz after it is all said and done.

  11. Its good that most of my cards have been redeemed already. It is bad that I can’t participate in this program. 🙁 Oh well, maybe I can shoot for the wrapper redemption program. 🙂

  12. When will this be in effect? I literally just applied 2 redemptions yesterday, from 11-12 Panini Limited Basketball. Can i still use those 2 or do i have to wait 4 months or how exactly is this going to work? Thanks!

    1. The redemptions that will be eligible for a swap out have to be at least 4 months pending in the system. Anything entered after April 6th will not be eligible.

  13. This is an awesome idea for those able to attend the Card Show. And I have also seen how many have commented on how this system should be available for everyone else as well. Whilst I do agree with this, I can also point out that I personally have NEVER had a drama with a Panini redemption (have redeemed around 20 items – all delivered as promised), so Panini, keep up the good work and cant wait for some NBA Rookie Auto’s to start hitting your product in 12/13.

  14. Great idea to run this at the biggest show of the year. I hope that David will be in attendance so the collectors can see how great the new CSM you guys hired has been doing.

  15. I’m not posting this to be negative, just to put this fact out there. Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way but when I get a Devante Smith-Pelly redemption for the new certified gold cards in the anthology update set, I have a hard time dealing with the idea of not getting that card. In this scenario, and others, I am invested in the idea of getting that. I have nearly the gold set of Freshman Fabrics from the first certified set and am half way through the updates in the anthology. Just so happens that Smith-Pelly is a redemption.
I love Panini though and in my opinion Panini has taken my hockey card collecting budget 100 per cent… favorite obviously being Certified.
