Panini Peek: 2010-11 Classics Basketball

A nifty everything-old-is-new-again design and the presence of autographs from some of the greatest hoops heroes of all time -- both retired legends and active superstars -- should serve 2010-11 Classics Basketball extremely well when it returns to enchant the collecting masses in late March.

A nifty everything-old-is-new-again design and the presence of autographs from some of the greatest hoops heroes of all time — both retired legends and active superstars — should serve 2010-11 Classics Basketball extremely well when it returns to enchant the collecting masses in late March.

This season’s installment of Classics carries a $6 pack price and delivers two autographs (including at least one signed-on-card Rookie Card numbered to 699 or less), two memorabilia cards, one Legend (numbered to 999) and at least 12 inserts per box when it arrives March 23.

Other highlights from the product (which includes 100 base cards, 40 Legends and 40 autographed Rookie Cards) include . . .

  • At least one autograph per case from a checklist that includes Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Bill Walton, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Amar’e Stoudemire and John Wall.
  • The return of collector-favorite insert sets such as Significant Signatures (numbered to 99 or less), Classic Combos Jerseys Prime and Blast from the Past Signature Jerseys (numbered to 25 or less).

“The Classic Moments insert is my favorite because the set highlights some of the outstanding accomplishments in the game of basketball,” says David Porter, Panini America Basketball Brand Manager. “From Wilt’s 100-point effort in 1962 to Blake Griffin scoring 20 points in his NBA debut this season, classic NBA moments come to life in this insert.”

  1. Excited to see images of the upcoming Classics basketball. Looks good.

This was one of my favorite products of last year!!! I’m trying to buy a few boxes of 2010 Classics Basketball. I love the on-card Significant Signatures and Rookie Auto’s.

  2. These are great, Tracy. Almost all of the cards embrace simplicity and the “Dress Code” auto/jersey shows that Panini isn’t just firing darts to determine the placement of the swatch.

Clean, simple, primary colours make for one hell of a colour-scheme and one hell of a release. This year’s basketball actually looks better than football; a terrific release unto itself.

Should we expect any “Classic Cuts” out of this product?

  3. I find Panini’s recent tributes to an “old school” look fascinating. Why the creative decision when others are getting shinier and shinier?

As for 10-11 Classics, as long as the on-card goodness stays alive, I think everyone will find something to be happy about. 09-10 Classics are what got me in to the hobby and 10-11 looks like it’s going to keep the faith alive!

  4. Looks nice – On the Classic Moments cards, I wish the background newspaper shot was “real” text from LA Times or local newspaper (maybe even a cut?) – just a thought.

  5. I’m really looking forward to this product. Do you know if it’s going to be 5 or 8 cards per pack? The sell sheet claims 8 per pack, although some other websites say it’s only 5 per pack. And last years was only 5 per pack if I remember right?
