Playoff Contenders Football, one of the most popular brands in sports card history, is slated to enchant collectors once again when the 2010 edition releases in early January.

Collectors have long considered Contenders the gold standard for NFL Rookie Cards. In 2010, that phrase takes on a most literal meaning with the pioneering introduction of “The Golden Ticket,” the industry’s first 14-karat solid-gold trading card.

Also new for this season are a strikingly fresh Rookie Ticket design, all on-card autographs for RPS Rookie Tickets and Rookie Ink cards, and the introduction of the attractive Super Bowl Ticket insert set.

Other set highlights include NFL Ink Quads (including a Drew Brees/Peyton Manning/Brett Favre/Tom Brady pairing) and Rookie Ticket Printing Plates.

Each 24-pack box of 2010 Playoff Contenders ($6 pack SRP) should yield four autographs (at least one on card), six Super Bowl Tickets, and two cards each from the Rookie of the Year Contenders, Draft Class, Rookie Roll Call, Legendary Contenders and three additional parallels or inserts.

Each case should deliver six on-card autographs from a roster that includes Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Ryan Mathews, Jahvid Best, Dez Bryant, C.J. Spiller, Dexter McCluster, Demaryius Thomas, Mike Williams, Ndamukong Suh, Golden Tate, Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy.

  1. Super Bowl Ticket cards are nice. I love the worn ticket look. The on-card auto’d Rookie Ink cards are solid. I wouldn’t mind to pull a C.J. Spiller Rookie Ink. Now if I can just add Sam Bradford, Suh… the entire 2010 NFL Draft 1st round to my Buffalo Bills, they’d be ok.

  2. From a design standpoint, the RC autos are bad. Too many big items fighting to be the focal point (Large, vertical ticket, large vertical name, and the player) so much that the picture of the player gets lost. So that’s unfortunate.

The other sets looks nice, the super bowl ticket in particular is nice.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Jason. Design is often such a subjective issue and I certainly appreciate your take. Having said that, I think this year’s Rookie Tickets are some of the best in a while — and early feedback from the collecting community seems to echo that sentiment.

I do absolutely agree with you on the Super Bowl Ticket insert; that’s a really sweet design.

Thanks again and please keep the feedback coming.

  3. Me, i love the “Rookie Ticket” autos design. Not that crazy about the “Rookie Ink” though, but i wouldn’t say it’s bad. It just pales in comparison to the others. I think the Brees/Manning “NFL Ink” dual auto (front) looks better than the Brady/Farve “NFL Ink” dual auto (back) without the solid black divider in the middle. I think the long black divider takes away from the design. I agree though, the “Super Bowl Ticket” design looks very nice!

  4. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Rookie Ticket!!! Refreshingly “clean” for a Panini product and a great look. The clarity on the auto section is MUCH appreciated. Really looking forward to this product. Keep nudging the designers in the direction of clean cards with great photography and Panini will win over any doubters. Beauty!
