Panini Peek: 2012-13 Panini Basketball

It's a common question around these parts, one we get quite often from passionate basketball collectors spanning the globe: Does Panini America ever plan to produce another Panini-branded NBA release with a big base set like it did back in 2009-10? The answer to that question before today has been "possibly." The answer to that question today, however, is "absolutely."

It’s a common question around these parts, one we get quite often from passionate basketball collectors spanning the globe: Does Panini America ever plan to produce another Panini-branded NBA release with a big base set like it did back in 2009-10? The answer to that question before today has been “possibly.” The answer to that question today, however, is “absolutely.”
Releasing in late February, 2012-13 Panini Basketball marks the proud return of a standalone, Panini-branded product that features a 300-card base set, a 60-card Rookie Card autograph subset featuring stars of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 classes, a rare Knights of the Round die-cut parallel, five unique autographed inserts and 50 Dress Code Jumbo memorabilia cards.

Each box of 2012-13 Panini Basketball (10 cards per pack, 24 packs per box) will deliver two autographs, seven Knight parallels, three Spirit of the Game, three Heroes of the Hall, three Matching Numbers and three additional inserts.
Other highlights include . . .

  • Hall of Fame Signatures — The game’s greatest legends and their autographs on a clean, classy design
  • Spokesmen Signatures — We’ve gathered signatures from all of Panini America’s superstar spokesmen — Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis — for this insert that includes two- and three-player combinations
  • Rated Rookie Autographs — The Rated Rookie comes to the hardwood with these special autograph patch cards
  • All-Panini — A 100-card tribute to the game’s greatest current superstars with a Gold parallel numbered to only 25
  • The Knight! — The most recognizable manufacturer logo in all of sports cards gets the superstar treatment with its own insert that includes a base version, a Black Knight parallel version numbered to 10 and a special die-cut Knights of the Round version that will fall at about one per case

We’ll have tons more 2012-13 Panini Basketball to preview in the coming weeks right here on The Knight’s Lance. But for now, enjoy this extended first-look gallery:

  1. Are the Spokesman and HOF Signatures both fully on-card auto sets? And will there be prime versions of the Dress Code jumbo memorabilia set?

  2. About time you brought that standalone set back. Panini Update seemed strange without Panini Regular. 😉 It’s like Diet Coke without Regular Coke!
Any Lillard autographs yet for this Blazers fan? 🙂

  3. Wow! ToTally certified is already a big big buzz! Then the Prizm will be ruling the world this holidays and so on and so forth.
Prizm( product of the year). Then elite comes to life, then this. Unbelievable! Kudos to your design team Tracy for their relentless pursue of great product!
Wow! We the collectors are definitely in for a great treatment of Basketball products and surprises!
    I’m very impress!
Love it! And Keep up the Absolulutely Great work in Panini!
    Thanks Tracy!

  4. I like this product and I bought tons of it back in 2009-2010. Got lucky in a retail bust and got an auto as well. I like the basics and glad they are returning.

  5. I’m so happy you guys are bringing Panini Basketball back! Looks and sounds like its going to be even better than 2009/2010!! Keep up the great work bro!

  6. Looking good- Keep up the great work Panini. Those on card autos would look great in any collector’s collection;)

  7. This would be my first time for this product and I’m already Hook!
Love the design! Tracy you should give your Design team a raise, coz they are Raising the bar!

  8. Very nice looking set , particularily like how the players are highlighted by the lack of colour in the background. It makes the Autographs look that much more impressive too!

  9. I like the fact that your bringing back base Panini but this set should be much bigger – I’m talking 350+ player cards – to give more coverage per team and provide further differentiation from your other products. I think Prizm and some other sets are at or near the 300 mark. I also hope that the base cards will be autograph friendly like the original Panini base brand. Thumbs up for giving the Panini logo (the knight) some prime time collectibility!

  10. My beef with Panini has been a lack of consistent brands. For example, Panini was 09-10 but no 10-11 or 11-12. Glad to see it back. I think if a set is done right, it should be something that collectors can anticipate each year. I agree that one set should feature a wide amount of players but Hoops fills that bill well I feel. As for Panini, if you are doing that set again, where is the great Next Day Signature cards that were super hot back then?

  11. IS this another product where the chances of pulling a stud auto less than 1% and fulled with “legend” autos? How about putting more stars in the product and less fillers.

  12. Just pulled the Lebron James dress code jumbo Jersey card!!! lavoy Allen redemption auto and Anderson varajao auto though the Lebron makes up for it. Legends subset as well
