As baseball prospectors across the country continue enjoying the plentifully inked fruit of Panini America’s first MLBPA-licensed product (2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Baseball), company officials are hard at work readying the highly anticipated second release, 2011 Playoff Contenders Baseball.

Due out February 22, the newest incarnation of the longstanding hobby favorite will deliver — like EEE — six autographs per box, including at least two on-card autographs. The product also marks the Panini America autograph debuts of 2010 MVP Josh Hamilton and 2011 Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw.

Other highlights of the product (packaged five cards to a pack, 24 packs to a box and 12 boxes to a case) include:

  • More than 150 top prospect autographs, including 50 on-card
  • An average case that yields a staggering 72 autographs, including at least 24 on-card
  • 1/1 Championship Tickets and 1/1 Press Plates for every base and prospect card in the set
  • Sweet Signs autographed sweet spot baseball leather featuring the legendary likes of Stan Musial, Whitey Ford, Cal Ripken Jr., Will Clark and top prospects such as Gerrit Cole, Dylan Bundy, Anthony Rendon, Josh Bell, Matt Purke, Nicky Delmonico and Bubba Starling among others
  • Future Stars Signatures highlighting top players looking to make their marks in the professional ranks

Below you’ll find an early peek at the goods to come. Stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional updates as the release date draws closer.

  1. Some great looking cards in this set, I have 2 questions:

    1. Will there be dummy cards in every pack to mask the thickness and weight of the on-ball autographs to dissuade pack searching or some other type of security measure? I don’t believe I’ve seen that in past Contenders releases, hence the question.

    2. When can we expect a checklist with a full list of autographs, specifically the veterans?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Love the inclusion of legends of the game, the Sweet Spot baseball ‘graphs are another thoughtful inclusion. Contenders offers significant investment -card value with room for growth…& something for every collector. Nice looking inserts!

  3. Being an Iowa boy and the Feller Museum only being 15 mins away, I am going to have to find the Bob Feller Sweet Sign card!

  4. Never got an email telling me about a new Knights Lance….wierd….anyways…I stumbled upon it. I must say the sweet signs took my breath away. Love the baseball look. And Playoff contenders to me has always been about the autographed rookie cards and seems like they are just as awesome as always. Looks just as great as the football version.

  5. Nice Set! I’ll have to try and get some in hope of pulling a Sweet Signs Cal Ripken Jr. Card! THAT would be SWEET! Any idea on SRP at this point? I’ll have to start selling to raise some money for it 🙂 Thanks Tracy! Have a GREAT Weekend!

  6. Panini Should Make a High Quality Baseball Product comparable to National Treasures… With Low #d Auto Patch Rcs… And 1/1 MLB Logoman rc Parallels… Or a Product With some significant Baseball cards. You guys should make a High End baseball Product!!!
