The NBA, Panini America Join Forces Again for Starting 5 Hobby Shop Promotion

The calendar flipping to February can mean only one thing (well, it can mean a few things; but for those of us with collecting genes, it means at least one thing): Basketball cards are about to take center stage – uh, center court – at hobby shops around the country.

The NBA and Panini America have joined forces again this season for the month-long NBA Starting 5 promotion that aims to get collectors into a hoops frame of mind right there in their local card shops. The program, now in its fourth season, features two different Starting 5 rosters – one for the program’s first two weeks and one for the program’s final two weeks.

Collectors are encouraged to visit their participating hobby shops to find out each of the Starting 5 rosters and then to open packs of 2010-11 Panini America basketball products in an effort to pull cards of those players. Once collectors have completed their respective Starting 5 collections, they return to the hobby shop for a prize pack that includes six special Starting 5 Panini cards and could include randomly inserted autograph and instant-win cards.

“Our partnership with Panini — now in its second year — has been great for both the league and our fans,” says NBA Vice President of Licensing Lisa Goldberg. “The NBA Starting 5 continues that tradition with this creative and fun promotion providing our fans another opportunity to connect with the NBA.”

Stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance throughout the promotion for updates on winning collectors and the shops that helped them.

  1. I love promotions like this. I’d love promotions like this if the one local card shop participated. I’d have to drive a few hours to be closest shop that is on the list.

      1. My nine year old and went in today and picked up the promotion and already successfully completed the starting five. The card pack is nice and we got a card that said we were an instant winner and the store didn’t know what that meant. There is no redemption or anything on the back. Anybody know what that means?

  2. How are the “You are an instant winner” / “You are not an Instant winner” cards supposed to work?? I saw one pack opened with a “WINNER” and it had an auto, but several of us got “WINNER” cards in packs, but nothing else inside!! We were told by the shop we DIDN’T win anything!!

    1. We got the instant winner and the store didn’t know what it was. There was no auto. They did have an autographed plexiglass covered Draft pass thing but didn’t know who that goes to. It would be nice to have an answer!

  3. Hats shirts keychains r prizes?? You mean the hats and tees the store employees at my lcs are wearing and told me the instant win card meant nothing???
