The Panini America QC Gallery & Checklist: 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball

It's tough to put a finger on how best to describe Panini America's new 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball until you -- literally -- put a finger on it. After all, no matter how revealing and enticing and scene-setting even the most captivating mock-ups can be, there's a whole new sensation when those mock-ups become real in the palm of your hand.

It’s tough to put a finger on how best to describe Panini America’s new 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball until you — literally — put a finger on it. After all, no matter how revealing and enticing and scene-setting even the most captivating mock-ups can be, there’s a whole new sensation when those mock-ups become real in the palm of your hand.
I was lucky enough to experience that sensation yesterday while perusing some of the cards uncovered during the recent Quality Control process. Simply, there’s a tactile dimension to many of Past & Present’s inserts — most notably Changing Times, Raining 3s and Breakout — that must be touched to be truly appreciated. But the product, out everywhere next week, is more than just tangible textures and visually arresting print technologies. A lot more.

2011-12 Past & Present Basketball is an eclectic mesh of current NBA superstars and all-time greats on a vibrantly hued, throwback design that pays homage to yesteryear with base-set variations, and Bread for Health, Bread for Energy and Bread for Life diecut inserts.
Each box delivers three autographs and one memorabilia card; but it’s the autograph checklist, particularly the aptly named Elusive Ink insert, that will likely generate the most buzz among hardcore collectors. The ambitious Elusive Ink idea was to target those players who’ve never appeared on a certified autograph trading card or haven’t appeared on one in quite some time.
To that end, the Panini America Acquisitions team landed the first-ever certified autographs of Bo Outlaw, Anthony Mason, Scooter McCray and Marv Roberts and the second-ever certified autographs of LaBradford Smith, Willie Burton, Kevin Willis and Major Jones.
Finally, Past & Present also marks the beginning of Panini America’s Dual Rookie Redemption program with randomly inserted redemptions good for the first cards of the top draft picks from the 2011-12 and 2012-13 classes.
Clearly, there’s a lot to digest with 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball. So between now and when the product goes live next Wednesday, take some quality time to soak it in with the following gallery and the first extensive look at this unique product. (Stay tuned after the gallery for complete Past & Present checklist.)

  1. Finally! Some new basketball WITH rookie cards! Can’t wait to show my customers this preview; they have been ravenous when it comes to new hoops.

  2. Cards you can feel. Die cuts. Flames. Classic retro feel. Makes me think back to the 90’s.
Nice jersey swatches. And the redemption cards for the rookie class are a unique twist as well. Overall looks like a great product. Another top notch one Panini

  3. I’m pretty sure Rod Strickland’s autograph was in an Autographics insert in 1996 and/or 1997 and not 1989. Any Byron Scotts in the set?

  4. What in the world?! Bryant Reeves? Kerry Kittles? Lawrence Funderburke?? This product is loaded with scrub retired player autos SMH.

  5. Love the Elusive Ink concept. How about going back to past NBA Championship teams and looking for players without autos? I think there are many team collectors that would love to have a certified auto of every member of a champion (I know I would)

  6. Will Panini be making any detailed release about how exactly the Rookie Redemption Program will work? For instance, I see in the small print of the photoed redemption that a drawing will be held to determine the checklist for redemptions on Oct. 29, 2012, but will all redemptions from all products be for the same Rookie Redemption set or will there be separate sets and designs for P & P, Limited, Gold Standard, etc. Also, will there be a list of rookies being included announced at some point and will there be short-printed redemptions or will all redemptions be the same? Sorry, if this has been covered elsewhere, but as a basketball collector I have been wondering about this program since it was first mentioned and have not yet found a detailed explanation of exactly how it is going to work.

    1. Yes, we will have complete details as the live checklist selection process draws nearer. All of the 2011-12 class Rookie Redemptions will be the same player for all three sets. The 2012-13 class Rookie Redemptions will be decided based on the actual 2012 NBA Draft. Stay tuned for additional details.

      1. Thanks for the reply, as a Cavs fan the last couple years have been pretty lean, so I have been looking forward to finally having some Kyrie Irving cards on the market.

  7. As a Nuggets fan, I was excited to read that an autograph of fromer Denver Rocket (ABA) Marv Roberts would be included in this release–until I scrolled down, and saw a photo of a Denver Nuggets uniform which was not worn until the 1976-77 season.
Marv Roberts was traded from the Denver Rockets in during the 1973-74 season, one year before the Denver Rockets changed their name to the Denver Nuggets, and completely overhauled their logos & colors. He would never suit up for the Denver franchise as a “Nugget”, whether it be ABA or NBA.
The player in the photo used on Marv Roberts’ card is Bo Ellis. Bo won an NCAA championship in 1977 at Marquette, then went on to play 3 underwhelming seasons (1977-1980) with the Denver Nuggets in the NBA before falling out of the league.

    1. Great catch, CJ. I guess that’s one of the potential hazards of targeting some of these obscure players. I’ve got a message into our photo people to make them aware and to see what might have happened.
Thanks again for pointing it out.

  8. Great looking cards Panini!!!! Cant wati to bust 4 or 5 or 6 or maybe 10 boxes!!! Ha ha. keep up the great work!!!

  9. Just pre-ordered 2 boxes yesterday. I haven’t collected basketball seriously in a while, but this I cannot avoid. You’re bringing me back – hopefully with a Bulls auto.
Can’t wait to soak it all in and review our first Panini product on the blog in too long!
    –Jon

  10. Loving the look of these. The set transitions nicely between retro and modern with some pretty slick visuals. The vertical swatch fits in very nicely on the cards as well!

  11. Ahhh, no Rasheed 🙁 I need to talk to the Man who picks the Players for the Products!
Tracy, can’t you tell them to put Rasheed in one of the upcoming Products?
There are so many Retired players on the checklist like Webber or Strickland. Why no love for Sheed? 🙁

  12. OMG finally we can get down to buisness the Present is finally here!!! Time for me to get my hands on some ROOKIES!!!!

  13. Tracy, is there any way to get an excel downloadable checklist similar to the one you presented here, but for all of Panini’s products? When I go to Panini America and want to download a checklist, I have to choose a specific set (main, insert, parallel, etc.) and the excel format is simply atrocious. Thanks.

      1. Thank you sir. Also, I have another question as I was going over the checklist. I REALLY like the Breakout insert set and will probably try to go for that set as well as the Autograph version. However I noticed that the following people don’t have an autograph version:
        John Wall (Panini Spokesperson)
        Brandon Jennings
        Tyler Hansbrough
        Andrew Bynum
        O.J. Mayo
        Ricky Rubio
Is there any particular reason for that? I noticed the same kind of thing with the Common Signatures, not everyone has an autograph version. And in the excel file it says that only the Prime cards are numbered. Any reason why the Autographs aren’t as well? Thanks and sorry for the pestering.

  14. Big Country! Awesome. This product is jam packed with so much fun factor in it, people are excited. Just listening and joining in on the Twitter chatter about it was fun.

  15. I do love that Panini is trying to use a wider variety of players in their checklists…its refereshing to not see the same autograph checklist over and over again. Still hoping one day to pull the first certified Arvydas Sabonis card, but it looks like i may have to wait until next year (i HOPE!!!)

  16. Love the look and feel of this product! It’s definitely nostalgic and brings back the glory days of card collecting. I’ll be breaking a few boxes and posting the video on YouTube and my blog. Wish me luck!
P.S. – When will the checklist for Gold Standard basketball be posted?

  17. I pulled a 2011 draft pick auto redemption for card #0. Player: 2011 draft pick auto xrcee. What does this mean? Thanks!

  18. I saw the draft redemption autograph card #0 check list says #1 EXCA #2 EXCB, so does that mean the EXCA will be for the #1 pick?

  19. Tracy, how do we know which player is for which redemption?
is Redemption XRCA- Kyrie Irving XRCB – Derrick Williams and so on?
and since there are 30 Rookies for the 1st round, which players are XRCAA,XRCBB,XRCC…?
Any help would be nice, since many cards are on ebay already and i dont want to pay too much for a redemption Card XRCA when its not Irving.
    thank you

  20. This product looks awesome! I love the idea of putting autograph cards from past players who dont have too many certified signatures out there! Super excited. Love the “Big Country” card!! Also LOVE the Blake Griffin “Modern Marks” card. This Set was just PURE GREATNESS. THANKS PANINI! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!

  21. Tracy can you let us know what cards are SP. Saw the Youtube video and you said Bill Walton was SP; just curious. Also in the future even with a mid level product like Past and Present it would be nice to include the checklist. I know several people have complained about that already. It just helps recognize what is possible and if we have questions. Thanks.

  22. I noticed the checklist doesn’t refer to the 2012 draft pick redemptions as being autographed, and the redemption cards themselves don’t mention it either. I was wondering if they will be autographed or not? Thanks!

  23. the more basketball the better!!! the A.B.A. CARDS ARE GREAT!!!!THE BEST IS IN THIS SET,,,SO AM PRIMED FOR THIS…JUST TO LET U KNOW PANINI COLECTERS BUY ALL SEASON LONG..DONT BE AFRAID OF MAKEING AN EXTRA SET OR 2!!!THANKS!!! STEVE

  24. I love this Box!!!
This is my favorite of all time!!!
Panini this for me is the way cards are supposed to be.
Great Quality, Legends, Old Skool, present stars.
