The Panini America Quality Control Gallery: 2011-12 Contenders Hockey (59 Images)

While most of the Panini America NHL team spent last week in Toronto redeeming wrappers and otherwise fanning the flames of the scorching 2011-12 Elite Hockey release at the 2012 Toronto Spring Expo, those who remained in Texas were up to their necks prepping the next hot hockey release: 2011-12 Contenders.

The product, which delivers three to four autographs per box, began packing out in earnest last Friday and Panini America’s Tim Trout was on hand to spearhead the quality control process for the completely overhauled, heavily on-card-autographed Contenders brand. The massive gallery that follows details just some of the sweet cards that surfaced during the QC process.

2011-12 Contenders Hockey began shipping on Monday, which means it will be live for the hockey-hungry masses one week from today. Until you’re able to bust some yourself, let us know your thoughts on the product so far as detailed in the gallery below.

  1. Looks awesome, as expected guys. Any word on a checklist, and if there will be any more Private Signings included? Thanks.

  2. Since tnere is a lot of relevant hockey being played in the northeast US where I live through the second round of the playoffs I have uncharacteristically paid attention to the sport over the last couple weeks. I have to say I’ve been impressed with the level of action and “watchability” to the (totally self-aware) bandwagon jumping, fairweather fan like myself. This product is certainly well-timed to capture the cross-contintental frenzy that is in progress, filled with awe-inspiring hits and hopefully solid value from every box to collectors of all sorts. I’ll be watching this release closely as I have been considering starting a single-player hockey PC, maybe beginning with a card from the annually epic release of Contenders! Thanks Tracy!

  3. These cards look absolutely amazing and I will have to buy a few boxes. After watching my Flyers lose last night 🙁 I would love to have the Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo and Erik Gustaffson auto cards. Great job on another top of the line product Panini! Another reason why you are my favorite card company!

  4. Hi Tracy…i can see a Cam Talbot and a Derek Stepan , No Carl Hagelin…any word if he’s in Contenders ? Thanks !

  5. Why is the “70/100” serial numbering for the Cam Atkinson Calder Contenders patch auto on the bottom of the card, whereas for the other 5 examples shown of that set it is on the top?

  6. Although I’m not a hockey collector, I am a fanatic card collector and can truly appreciate the product. I usually buy numerous boxes of Contenders Football. I do have one complaint though, I didn’t see any Caps. What gives?

  7. The Cup contenders autographs are amazing. The black and silver signature stand out. With the piece of jersey its like the icing.
They are sort of like a good slice of grilled Delmonico or tenderloin steaks. You make it to perfection and you just want to dig right in. And of course, try not to drool as well.

  8. Not sure if 10-11 was similar, but Contenders Hockey looks like Panini’s answer to a classic UD set, SP Authentic. With the serial numbered rookie autographs, autograph set (similar to SOTT) and the ever so sought after Rookie Patch Autos #/100! I love the Patch Auto design, I hope this is something that we’ll see in the basketball and football product. Keep up the great work guys.

  9. i love the black patch cards!!!
nd the silver autos on them!
any of Ovechkin in this set of contenders??
nice to see some on card autos as well!

  10. All of the autograph content in this product looks amazing. A great step in the right direction for this product which should make it hard to beat for years to come in terms of some of the best rookie autographs of the season. Football has Contenders, and I think Contenders will be the hockey product to go to from now on.

  11. Hey i was wondering what the odds are of pulling an auto or memorabilia card in the 11-12 contenders , Like it usually says on the box look for 3 to 4 auto’s and or memorabilia cards , Depending on the box , And i haven’t found out or seen how many Auto’s Or Memorabilia cards you can usually pull in the 11-12 contenders , If anyone knows then please let me know , Thanks !!

  12. Hi Tracy…still waiting on the checklist my friend…any help ?
