The Panini America Quality Control Gallery: 2012-13 Preferred Basketball (114 Images)

The NBA will conclude its 2012-13 regular season today with a full slate of 15 games, which means we're precariously close to the splendor of the postseason -- when play on the court heats up considerably. Fittingly, the basketball action inside hobby shops across the country is on the verge of heating up, too. One week from today, 2012-13 Preferred Basketball goes live, providing the heavily anticipated follow-up to last season's successful debut.

Fittingly, the basketball action in the hobby is on the verge of heating up, too. One week from today, 2012-13 Preferred Basketball goes live, providing the heavily anticipated follow-up to last season’s successful debut.

On Monday provided a tiny glimpse into the content-rich new edition, which delivers three on-card autographs and one memorabilia booklet card in every four-card box. Today, we’re pulling the curtain back completely by sharing much of what was uncovered yesterday during the Quality Control process. Boasting true Rookie Cards for the first time, a bevy of new booklets and the return of popular Silhouettes, Rookie Silhouettes and Panini’s Choice Award die-cuts, Preferred is primed to shine in its sophomore season.

You can see exactly what we mean by perusing the comprehensive gallery below — and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional coverage of 2012-13 Preferred Basketball in the coming days.

  1. Fine and comprehensive gallery, THack. My initial impression is quite positive, loving the Pippen Panini’s Choice auto, and you guys have mastered the manufacturing of the die-cut Jersey booklet. Certainly, the advent of the booklet is a welcome addition to the hobby as single player and even multi-player memorabilia cards just feel stale…unless the swatches are multi-color. Even then, the collectability of UN-auto’d mem’ cards is lukewarm. So, big thumbs-up for the eye-catching and thematic booklets.
That said, and I wonder if anyone else has made this observation; Preferred certainly contains issues that are certain to be sought-after. But it appears to me that Panini took several products and slammed them together. The silhoutte cards are assuredly sweet, but then you include the other “Preferred” autos, and then the Crown Royale autos, etc. As opposed to being identifiable via the strength of its own design and properties unique to “Panini Preferred” exclusively, I find that the product lacks a distinguishable identity of it’s own. It feels, to me, that the Panini plucked design elements from a number of other releases and is trying to bring them together in this product.
If that was the intent… Mazel Tov! You’ve done it! If not, then Panini has created a product that lacks a certain cohesiveness.

This is merely my opinion, others will surely disagree with me and that’s simply part of the appeal and value of this Knight’s Lance forum!
Thanks again for the gallery Tracy!

  2. Awesome product, I’m sure it’s even better 1st hand. Hope I can land a gold Scottie Pippen auto.

  3. Praise be to the Hackler for sharing this bountiful cornucopia of blessed cardboard on thine blog. It was good muttere the masses under their breath whilst heads were bowed in reverence, praise be the cardboard gods.

    Draft 96 ohhhhhh yeahhhhh

    Yes i’m overtired

  4. Do I see a Preferred scavenger hunt in our future? Nice looking gallery, I remember being most impressed by the booklets last year but I have to say the Preferred on-card autos with the different colored backgrounds (like the green Udoh) are really drawing my eye this year. They remind me of a baseball release from the late 90s that I always liked. Thanks Tracy!

  5. I’d like to see booklet cards with just one player on it. Maybe do 6 pictures of the one player at different points in his career, rookie/all-star game/different teams..and then maybe incorporate some kind of autograph onto the card.

  6. :O I saw the pip not signed and was hoping it was a redemption so i could get the pip booklets out of the way!! you guys are messing with me arent you!!! AND you only made 10 of them. just quietly, by my count, my 2000th pippen could come from this product!

  7. Panini Preferred in a way is National Treasures to us NBA collectors. Due to the fact it is the biggest release of the year. That being said I just wanted to state a few of my opinions (some will agree some will disagree). 1. When you have a product like Preferred that is known to be “the best of the best” and also cost the most out of any other Panini Basketball product. I would expect there to be less D League players and less 5 rows down the bench players. It’s hard to drop that much money on a 3 card 1 booklet product knowing you could get some no names that are playing D League ball. 2. I look forward most to the booklets that this product brings. The patched booklets are by far the most eye catching to me, I really hope eventually yall will do a basketball product where it’s a single player with a jumbo patch booklet. Maybe even an auto of the player. I can picture a Kyrie Irving booklet with a nice jumbo patch and it blows my mind how sexy and how big the demand would be for it. I really like Preferred and I appreciate the effort yall put into each product but I think it’s time for us NBA collectors to start getting products like Football & Baseball. For example, National Treasures type of products. Thanks for the pictures! Can’t wait to open a couple boxes!

    1. I agree with you this product is 200$ and it should only have players that are known to be good.maybe another 10-15 rookies that are proved good.cause there is only 4 cards in and if i pull ehpe udoh and perry jones auto i just lost hell of a lot of money cause their autos sell for less then 5 bucks.so panini idk what to say.also i pulled 2 gold kendrick perkins out of full case of sellect !!!are you serious?2000 case and main hits kendrick perkins two of the same cards???work on your qulity control panini please.and funny fact.when i pulled a second gold perkins, same common perkins was in front of gold perkins what kind of quality is that????

  8. I love the product but i think in the knicks card booklet you guys are missibg j.r smith shiuld definetely be in it.plus idk whats going on why you guys have no carmelo anthonys autos?i think lots of knicks fans dont buy panini products that often cause of that.i am not joining group breaks cause i cant get his auto anymore.last time i seen his auto was from panini black box i had 5/5 flag patch.please guys if its in your power make his autos again.thanks a lot for all the gret products.!!!
