It took all of one release for Panini America’s Intrigue Basketball product to make its micro-etched mark on the hobby. Amid a 2012-13 NBA collecting season not the least bit short on options, that debut release of Intrigue last September delivered a difference-making insert remains instantly recognizable all these months later: Intriguing Players.
The striking, superstar-focused chase set that debuted in 2012-13 Intrigue Basketball is as memorable for its stunning full-front micro-etching as it is for offering multiple photo variations of the NBA’s 20 best players. The good news for those collectors who embraced the concept last season? Intriguing Players is back for 2013-14. The better news? Well, it’s even better.

For 2013-14 Intrigue Basketball, due out next Wednesday, Panini America product developers have accentuated the Intriguing Players concept with perimeter die-cutting and a return to the Silver, Gold and Black short-print structure that so intrigued player collectors one season ago. Many of this year’s options are featured in the Quality Control Gallery below.
Also showcased below are more than 70 other reasons we think collectors will regard 2013-14 Intrigue Basketball as a much-improved sequel to last year’s debut. The product’s autographed inserts honoring the game’s greatest dunkers (Dunk Company and Slam Ink) return, as do the title-worthy Winning Ink Autographs and Red and White & Blue Signatures (this year featuring . . . wait for it . . . a red, white and blue color scheme). Intrigue’s multi-memorabilia marvels are back too, headlined by Intriguing Pairs, Terrific Trios and Fearless Foursomes.
As expected, the 2013-14 rookie class is well represented in Intrigue; perhaps somewhat unexpectedly, so is the 2014-15 rookie class. In addition to four autograph or memorabilia cards, each 11-card box also guarantees one 2014 NBA Draft X-Change bonus card.
The following gallery offers an exhaustive examination of the product, which began shipping late last week. Enjoy the views and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance in the coming days for continued coverage of 2013-14 Intrigue Basketball.

  1. Nice cards! The Dunk Company cards looks a little strange for the first sight because of the autos put above the picture, but it is alright i guess.

  2. Last year’s Intriguing Players packs were only slightly intriguing. They were incredibly redundant if you opened any kind of volume of the product, in spite of the player variations. With the 20 best players represented again, I’m guessing most of this year’s Intriguing Players will be repeats of last years Int. Players and again, repetitious.
I like the idea of the Draft Pick cards but am wary of the time involved in actually getting the “live” cards. (reference the trouble-plagued redemptions for the double rookie class).
The font of the base cards of this new product appears very similar to last year’s base cards.
Just because something was “well received” one year, doesn’t mean it has to be released the following season.

  3. Some pretty cool stuff!
Call me picky though, but why have an autographed insert called “Dunk Co” and have photos of some of the guys shooting jump shots?

  4. Bringing the gorgeous stuff again I see Panini, hope to get some soon and maybe I’ll pull some cards that rival these stunners shown here!

  5. Thanks for the look and review Tracy and Panini! Great looking set! The designs are appealing and the auto’s stand out nicely :-). Nice job!!

  6. What is the theme for this years RED WHITE BLUE autos? they can’t be players who played for the US team as a lot of the featured players are not listed on the all time list of players who represented the country… Aguire , Hornacek , Wilkes , Blake. etc ?
