The Weekly Panini Price Index (PPI): Justin Bieber 2.0 Auto Card Fetches Huge Bucks

There’s been a firestorm debate between the mainstream media and passionate card collectors lately about the current health of the trading card category. Given the magnitude of the brouhaha, we thought it would be fun to start a weekly segment on The Knight’s Lance that features the sell of a big-ticket trading card of a newsworthy entertainer or athlete. Hopefully along the way we can sway some “expert” opinions about the true state of the industry.

Think of the Weekly Panini Price Index (PPI) as a sort of Stock Market-esque look at the hottest Panini America trading cards on the market and what they’ve sold for recently. We’ll let you decide whether this is a bull or bear market.

The debut of the Weekly PPI features a feverish look at a Justin Bieber certified autograph card from the Justin Bieber 2.0 trading card set. The teen crooner’s autographed 1/1 card, which was dropped into the hugely successful Panini America Black Friday Promotion, closed at a whopping $4,500.99 on eBay in January 2012.  Early this week, Bieber made headlines with the release of his new single, “Boyfriend, which has already sold more than 400,000 downloads.

It’s not too late to get in on Panini America’s version of Bieber Fever.  Adoring fans can go to iCollectPanini.com to buy Justin Bieber 2.o trading cards.  And don’t forget, five special Justin Bieber 2.0 trading cards were randomly dropped into product and are redeemable for uncut, full pieces of clothing worn by “Biebs” himself.

  1. Great new feature, its always interesting to see what these rare and highly sought after cards realize in the open market. Gotta be honest though, not a fan of the kid or his music.

  2. Some nice cards I just pulled the Lamar odom certified green , I freaked out when I saw it was a laker I thought it was Kobe still a nice auto 4/5

  3. The proof is everywhere that the industry isn’t dying. It’s just changed. These prices are just part of it.

It’s also more exciting than ever. I’ve never seen a grown man dance to Justin Bieber on video before until I saw you Hackler. Collectors are more passionate today!

    1. You say that because you run a card blog. You NEED the industry to stay alive. These sales don’t mean anything. Small sample. Meaningless in the grand scheme. But I wouldn’t expect a hack blogger to understand that.

  4. The proof is everywhere that the hobby isn’t dying. It has just changed. These prices are just a small bit of proof behind both those points.

Another part is the first time I’ve ever seen a grown man dance to Justin Bieber on video. We all remember that, don’t we Hackler?

  5. There is a version of that Kobe Bryant but the black 1/1 version on the bay right now and its a buy it now 9,999.00. Thats some bank for ya. Even if was to go for 7 still a heck of a bang! Newton’s NT cards will be ones to watch, Reebok tag and 1/1 will go anywhere from 5-10 I bet. Nice addition Tracy, I also will look forward to this every week :)!!

  6. I want to thank you for your daily posts. I love reading them every day, and seeing the great new products Panini is putting out. I am a long time collector, and continue to get my kids involved. I have a favor to ask of you… I opened a black box from the industry show I’m Vegas. I pulled a Chris Paul patch auto 1/1 from the 2010-11 Gold Standard product. I’m curious how this card can be allowed to have Paul’s auto on it, as he was not a signer for Panini until just recently. Any info would be greatly appreciated. In the sense of trying to sell it to recoup some of the money I’ve spent this year on cards, I’d love to see maybe a blog post about my card. I can email you the pics and info if you’re interested. Thanks so much!
