There’s an unmistakable aurulent aura — a gilded glimmer if you will — surrounding the impending arrival of 2010-11 Panini Gold Standard Basketball, the super-premium product with the precious-metal motif that promises a truly unique collecting experience.

So regardless of when you think the golden age of basketball was, the golden age of basketball cards — quite literally — begins in June.

That’s when Gold Standard strikes its first impression on the marketplace, packing among its many fortunes the 15-card Gold Bars insert that includes cards embedded with pieces of real 14-karat gold. The base Gold Bars insert, displayed in its entirety below, is numbered to 299 and printed on a stunning holographic filmboard that’s accented with gold foil.

Gold Bars is then paralleled by Memorabilia (numbered to 299 or less), Prime Memorabilia (numbered to 25 or less), Signatures (numbered to 99 or less), Material Signatures (numbered to 99 or less) and Prime Material Signatures (numbered to 25 or less) versions.

It’s the last parallel, Gold Bars Gold Rush, that takes on a most literal brilliance by replacing game-worn memorabilia with a piece of real 14-karat gold. Each Gold Rush card is numbered to just 10, and they’re easily among the most unique inclusions in a product full of them.

But don’t just take our word for it. Check out the gallery below and imagine, if you can, the golden possibilities. Oh, and for more information on 2010-11 Gold Standard Basketball, click here, here, here and here.

  3. Interesting, kind of reminds me of another product called Treasury, except this time with Gold instead of Dollars. I’m not sure how I feel about the design, but I’ll look at more images from the set and post about it when I get a chance.
